I have always had a passion for literacy and working with children. After graduating summa cum laude with a B.A. in English, I began working at an educational publishing company as an editor to help create textbooks for students. In 2008 I returned to school to get my M.Ed in Curriculum and Instruction for Children's Literature, which was a mixture of literature and education (theory, psychology, curriculum) classes. The last 3 years I have worked as a volunteer with the Everybody Wins! literacy program and have volunteered weekly with high school students at my church. My tutoring strength is obviously reading and English language arts (grammar, composition), as my education, work experience, and tutoring experience are all in that area. I have an extensive background in the mass communications field. My formal education includes a bachelor's degree in journalism and a master's degeee in mass communications, both from Drake University in Des Moines. Professionally, I have written for daily newspapers and for the public relations and marketing efforts of major Iowa corporations. I am patient, easy going and considerate. I understand that students learn in different ways, so I try to adapt my style accordingly. For example, perhaps one student learns best from oral instruction, while another prefers hands-on experience. My goal is to shape my teaching approach to best fit the needs of the student.

My approach for each class is to focus on the text and do exercises that give students the opportunity to work with the text first-hand. I focus on troublesome areas and I spend many hours planning each class. I prefer to let students come up with their own decisions, and craft their responses into the key ideas of the lesson. I believe that flexibility is key, and this strategy makes the students feel comfortable with discussing and thinking on their own terms. I am currently a teaching assistant for the Simpson College English Department. I selected the books for the semester, drafted the curriculum, and I instruct classes. I also hold advisory office hours. I teach poetry, fiction and nonfiction. In addition to these things, I am a poet and fiction writer with a high level of experience and craft, and can assist students in expressing themselves creatively.

My teaching style is that I believe all students can learn but that there are different learning styles and we must match the correct learning style with the student. I am a very patient teacher who can really connect to students and their parents. I will do all that I can do to see your child grow academically. At the elementary level I have 2 years experience as a K,1st and 2nd grade combined teacher, three years as a 1st grade teacher and 1 year as combined 1st and 2nd grade teacher. In the area of special education I have taught students from age 3 to 16 with Mental Disabilities for 8 years. Currently I am working as a substitute teacher for the Carlisle Community Schools and Des Moines Public Schools.
