I am a believer in the socratic method. As an Avid tutor we were taught to employ this method to help students understand concepts. I think that it is better to ask questions, and guide students' thinking rather than just giving them the answer, or telling them how to do a problem. Simply telling someone how to do something or giving them the answer prevents that person from figuring it out for his or herself. If the student can figure it out for themselves they will achieve a much better level of understanding.

I had students who were mostly visual learners and needed everything written down or printed on handouts; I had students who were mainly auditory learners and needed to have everything said to them, sometimes two or even three times in different ways. As a college student, I understand the difficulties and frustrations that arise from feeling ignorant at times. It is important to me, when I teach, that my student feels reassured when he or she does not understand something. First, I explain principles on a level that I initially judge to be adequate for the student. Then, if the student does not understand, I come up with a more simplified explanation, and continue in this fashion until the concept is grasped.
