My comments on tutoring Genetics : BS Biology and held NC teaching certificate for 4 years prior to changing fields. Genetics course work included both Genetics and Cytogenetics. Worked in college as a laboratory assistant for three years.

My teaching style varies to the student. I first try to asses prior knowledge and comprehension through general questions. Once this has been established, I use examples, visual aids, and verbal communication to better illustrate the topic at hand. Everyone has different learning styles. Therefore, it is vital to teach using the most appropriate style for the individual.
Served over three years as laboratory assistant while attending Greensboro College. Duties included teaching small groups as well as entire laboratory on occasion. I have a BS in Biology and Genetics from North Carolina State University. I have recently taken a refresher course in Anatomy and Physiology to go back to school for radiology. I have taken college level math courses through Calculus II, I have taken General Biology, Microbiology, Biochemistry, Organic Chemistry, and multiple courses in Genetics. I have helped tutor in high school for the Chemistry AP exam and helped fellow students in college.
I believe in being hands on and visual, many students have problems in math and science because they are unable to visualize the words written in their books. I am extremly organized so that my time is best spent on the most difficult areas for each individual student.

I do not have a particular style of teaching. I prefer to talk to the individual I am tutoring and together discover the best way to teach them the subject material. I believe that everyone learns information at a different pace and that some information is easier to process than other information. I believe that individuals should be comfortable while learning in order for them to actually learn. I would never force someone to learn "my way" and would work with them on developing a way that works for both of us. I would also focus on teaching proper study habits so the individuals can apply them and possibly not need a tutor in the future.

As a liberal arts student, I was taught to pursue the bridge between science and understanding. My education has fostered in me an appreciation of learning, and a belief that comprehension is attainable through multiple avenues. If a student struggles by one avenue, then I believe it is my job to pave another. A student must be able to not only know an answer, but also understand how they themselves got to that answer.
