A Little Bit About Me...

Part of the advantage I have as a math tutor in particular is the fact that I failed math miserably in highschool myself. I have only learned what I know because I was bound and determined not to let any subject get the best of me. Unlike many math teachers who naturally understand math, I have the benefit of understanding precisely why students don't understand and the patience to explain a topic as many different ways as possible until the student and I hit on a way that works.

I now attend graduate school to obtain an MS in Applied Anthropology. I believe a successful instructor is the most important part of teaching; one who is knowledgeable, wise, and be able to effectively communicate the knowledge to the students. I believe this can be achieved primarily by knowing the entirety of the subject taught and being able to connect with the students on an individual basis. When considering my teaching style, it is difficult to explain a single process for teaching. When working with different people it is important to remain creative, inventive, and patient. Every person has different learning styles and it is important to recognize in that person what helps them understand more fully. Whether it is diagram and pictures, breaking a complex problem into many simple parts, comparing similar examples that are familiar to the person, or simply taking the time to make sure that the child feels comfortable saying "I don't know". All of these are useful tools, but in my opinion by far the most important is patience. Remaining patient when someone doesn't understand is the absolute most important thing.
