I recently graduated from Bard College, a selective liberal arts school in New York. I have taken classes in a variety of subjects including biology, french, history, and writing. I recently completed a 90 page thesis. I have excellent critical thinking and writing skills, which have served me well as a student. As a tutor, I strive to engage my students in thinking complexly about the topic at hand. I have experience tutoring middle school aged children in music, math, and writing. I also have experience working with preschool aged children.
I believe that learning through hands-on experience is the best way to fully comprehend material. I want to interest students in academics. To accomplish this, a teacher must show how math, or reading is useful; how anything can be exciting. I want to make learning fun. And I use a variety of tactics to accomplish this.

I graduated from high school as number eleven in rank out of 248. I often assisted other students in both high school and college. Later, as a homeschooling mother of four, I taught all of my children all subjects through the eighth grade level. I just returned from the island of Saipan, where I taught high school English in a private school, and seventh grade English in a public school. I presently am a certified substitute teacher in the Cumberland County, PA, public school system, where I teach almost all grade levels and subjects. Through personal and professional experience, I have come to believe that fluency is most quickly achieved through immersion in a language (and instruction in only that language). However, accuracy can be developed and maintained more consistently when a student is able to compare his or her native tongue to the one which he or she is studying - as long as the student has a good understanding of the grammar and other basics of the native language. As a result, I believe in that constant exposure to a language, coupled with conceptual comparison to the native tongue, will foster the best combination of fluency and accuracy. I also believe that appreciation of the cultural and historical elements of a foreign language will encourage students in their studies and help them maintain enthusiasm when they meet a challenge.
