Super tutor!

I enjoy teaching and observing my students' different learning styles. I respect each student's individual method of assimilation. I work hard to accommodate his or her particular needs. I delight in the dynamics of the classroom and strongly believe that I can make a difference in whether the student becomes engaged in the learning process.
I place a high value on formal education and believe strongly in lifelong learning, for the betterment of the individual and, ultimately, for society. While raising three young children, I obtained my undergraduate degree in business administration. In later acquiring a law degree, I was introduced to the rigorous demands of such study and to the fascinating arena of reasoning and analytical thinking required by this discipline. I have tutored young children intermittenly over several years, with one stint of four years length as a Literacy Vo ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

My teaching philosophy and style is founded upon the belief that all children are brilliant and can succeed. My approach to teaching is highly individualized and targeted to meet a student's specific needs. If your child is struggling, I believe in figuring out the root of the problem, boredom, trouble reading or note-taking, learning style, and then finding strategies that address that difficulty directly. In teaching, I am patient, motivated, and fun. I like to make whatever I'm teaching come alive for the student. I want my students to understand that learning is a life-long process where they can explore the world; not something they are forced to do, but something that they get to do. So let's have some fun with it.
I have earned a bachelor’s degree in History and English, as well as a master’s degree in teaching. My educational background has given me a wide range of knowledg ... read more

Leadership and learning are indispensable to each other.

I don't use a lesson plan or guided lessons, I let the kids lead. They usually know what they need help on and if they can figure out what they are having problems with, then everything usually starts making sense. I usually keep my laptop with me, I refer to it if there is something I can't answer or figure out how to start drawing. I don't rely on it, but usually use it as a reference tool.
I've never actually tutored someone, but I am very good at relating with younger kids and High Schoolers. I was in band from 8th grade to 12th grade where I participated in the Front Ensemble section with keyboards, vibraphones, marimbas, xylophones and various other instruments. I was in the Wind Ensemble which is the highest band class and my last year they introduced the Percussion ensemble where I was a soloist. I was also the section leader during my last year as well. A Little Bit About Me...

I believe everyone will respond well to individualized instruction when the tutor studies the student's learning style and offers the information in the form best suited to each learner. I am patient and encouraging with students. I work hard to find ways to present a subject so that each learner will find it interesting.
I am the author of five historical novels and a number of articles, poems and short stories. I occasionally do short “residences” teaching Language Arts and Drama to special needs students in k-12 schools for VSA Arts of Florida. My graduate studies emphasized American and Tudor/Stuart History. My doctorate included a Criminal Justice minor. I regularly teach writing and grant writing seminars to adults, usually through libraries on weekends or in the evening.

All learning starts with a question, both by teacher and student alike. My role is both as teacher (coach and guide) and student (questioner). I should employ a variety of questioning techniques to better understand strengths and weaknesses, then prescribe remedies tailored for individual strengths and weaknesses, facilitating the learning process and desired outcome. Most people know intuitively how they learn, as well as which modalities work best for them. Paying attention, listening, probing with questions, observing responses, being patient is the first part of my job. Often times the student knows what works best and can even tell you. So I just need to pay attention. Once the diagnosis is evident then I can prescribe, or at least give suggestions that help facilitate the desired outcome. Then it's evaluate, make adjustments, continue and expand on new learning sets and ac ... read more

A significant portion of my professional career has included working with youth in classroom settings, community-based programs, and juvenile detention centers. In addition, I traveled extensively throughout Florida as an Education and Training Coordinator for Service Learning projects. This exposed me to the unique challenges that teachers, school administrators, parents, and students face on a daily basis. As a researcher for gang programs, I developed great empathy for youth desiring to leave gang-related violence and pursue educational goals to improve their lives. During the past three years I have worked with students in small group settings and one-on-one. Specific areas of study have included English, writing, and assisting students with developing critical thinking skills. Last year I taught a six week summer course in English; the target audience was children of migrant ... read more
