Hearing Impaired is one of my top subjects! I recently graduated with honors from the National Technical Institute for the Deaf. I graduated with a BS in American Sign Language interpreting. Through 4 years of rigorous study, I learned American Sign Language, PSE, as well as Cued Speech. I have interacted with and interpreted for a multitude of Deaf and hard of hearing people. I have worked with deaf and hard of hearing children, as well as Deaf and hard of hearing adults. I have also worked with deaf and hard of hearing people with a variety of disabilities. I have taken several Deaf-taught classes on Deaf Culture, as well as classes on Deaf oppression.

When it comes to language, I believe that people tend to learn best by doing. I also believe wholeheartedly that successfully learning a language depends on your exposure to that language. Continuous exposure to any language can help language acquisition. For English, regardless of what specifically the student is struggling with, consistent reading and writing practice is key. With a manual language like ASL, practicing signing skills and receptive skills is invaluable. Finally, I believe that people learn better when their strengths are pointed out and highlighted rather than their weaknesses. Many students who struggle in school are caught in a perpetual cycle of perceived failures. Optimism, unwavering support, and excitement are key when working with any student.
I have always had a passion for learning. Part of my passion includes helping others learn, grow, and succe ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I love to work with children of any age. I have been volunteering for over 15 years helping wherever and whenever I can to help make the lives of children more enriched. I have two boys of my own (age 10 and 14) and have been successful in helping them achieve the best they can. I have been teaching kids as a substitute for many years and went back to school in my middle 30's to become a teacher. Unfortunately the availability of teaching positions in my area has prevented me from full time employment but I've kept myself busy subbing and working with young adults and those with disabilities further their educational needs.
I graduated Magna Cum Laude in 2007 from SUNY Brockport with an undergraduate degree in Elementary Education, English and Special Education. I have worked as a substitute teacher in all grade levels and in all subject areas. I have been accepted into a high d ... read more

Once in a classroom I realized that I was meant to teach. I love working with students who are challenging and those who challenge me. I believe that I can become a better teacher only by continually challenging myself and my students. The key phrase “engaging students” seems less than what is required in the classroom. I want my students to be engaged but I want them to encompass and enjoy what they are doing as well. I love technology and new method topics; I have a very strong math and science background as well as excellent written and verbal presentation skills. I was a hands on learner and often use hands on methods to teach when possible. I have taught every level from kindergarten to college level and feel comfortable doing so.
I am interested in tutoring because I love teaching regardless of the subject matter. I’ve been lucky enough to be given the opportunity to try se ... read more

I believe that every child is entitled to an education within a safe and nurturing environment, which is reflected in my own classrooms. I am passionate about teaching my students the skills and tools they need to one day pursue knowledge on their own. A teacher knows his/her students as individuals with their own set of experiences, needs, strengths and weaknesses and recognizes these needs, teaching in a manner that is conducive to the individual child’s learning style. I believe that I can accomplish this by designing differentiated lessons that incorporate my student’s skills and the various intelligences. I am applying for this position for many reasons. This learning can be assessed to evaluate student needs and understanding, as well as teacher effectiveness. It is important that in each classroom I am also learning by constantly reflecting and evaluating my methods. It is becaus ... read more
