I received my B.S. in physics and went on to work at a Community College tutoring math. I enjoyed this work immensely and received excellent reviews from the students. While working at the college I also tutored middle school and high school students privately. In High School I took a class on Society and the Child which involved tutoring english and math two days a week for a fourth grade class. While one student may be able to memorize and understand facts one way, say by repetition, another student may learn the information by understanding the background and context that it comes from. My major in college was elementary education, with an "area of concentration" in mathematics. However, my experience in teaching was in all subjects. I first taught grades one through eight in a one-room school setting; then grades 4-8 in an expanded two-room school. In the small-school environment, I was able to give much one-on-one instruction; and therefore, I realize the value of this type of teaching. I also was able to see levels of abilities among the students in each small class, and can adapt material accordingly (once I get to know the student). I have also done some temporary private tutoring for one student in reading, math, grammar, and spelling, at the 3rd-4th grade level.
