Biology is one of my top subjects!

My teaching style is very individualized based on the needs of the student. Some students need frequent breaks to be able to focus in for 15-20 min at a time while others can stay engaged for an entire hour.

I don't have a style. When I left high school in rural Iowa I was told I was retarded and would never even be able to write a check. At age 38 when struggling through Iowa State my chem teacher sent me to be tested for learning disabilities and I had multiple learning disabilities but an above average IQ. I don't teach I allow the student to learn in an environment where they are listened to, talked with(not to) and treated like they have value and worth. I treat them the opposite way I was treated. And when they do well we cheer together!

As a scientist, I have the unique opportunity to present science as a living discipline. It is my belief that my experience in designing experiments, interpreting results, writing papers and applying for grants can enrich the understanding and appreciation of science for a biology or chemistry student. It makes a great difference to be able to teach science as a process instead of a simple collection of facts.
