Through personal and professional experience, I have come to believe that fluency is most quickly achieved through immersion in a language (and instruction in only that language). However, accuracy can be developed and maintained more consistently when a student is able to compare his or her native tongue to the one which he or she is studying - as long as the student has a good understanding of the grammar and other basics of the native language. Open and flexible.Rule #1 is to listen to the student. Rule #2 is to teach the other the way I would want to be taught. My preference in teaching is to first teach the student the practical side of things. Can the student perform the basic calculations for example so as to pass the exam. Once the student has developed a "gut level understanding", then I can move onto the more theoretical understanding of the topic, depending of course on where the student is at.
