I emphasize understanding the principle as opposed to just “getting the answer”. Sometimes a student will get frustrated with me because of that, but I’m committed to teaching how to fish and not just handing out fish. For example, with a mathematical problem, I may throw out additional problems revolving around the same principle at hand to make sure the student really understands as opposed to just getting past one question. Similarly, in a linguistic setting, after the student feels he or she understands the given word or grammatical structure, I will ask the student to construct additional sentences to make sure they really get it. My greatest strength as a tutor is that I know what it is like to have no knowledge of a foreign language.
