Essential learning done right!

I earned a bachelors degree in Elementary Education with special attention to reading from Purdue University. In Aug. 2008-May 2009 I taught kindergarten at West Grove Elementary in Center Grove Community School Corporation. During this time I filled in for two teachers on extended leaves. This experience allowed me to gain knowledge about teaching and how to instruct diverse students. I learned many different teaching strategies, including differentiation and integration with multiple subjects. Due to my undergraduate experiences at NCAT, I was able to develop new skills while enhancing the ones that I already possessed. While at A&T, I earned a degree in African American studies, in which I learned extensive grammatical skills due to writing graduate level research papers. Basic education requirements enabled me to gain and understanding in many different subjects such as math and science. During my undergraduate career, I have tutored students in English and mathematics.

My style is relaxed, but focused, with a touch of humor to ease nerves. The first step is creating comfort and trust between the student and the tutor. To do this, when coaching Chemistry, I would have the student present a problem. Then, I'd say, well, let's figure this out together. And, truly, that is what we would do, step by step, by asking questions. What do we know? What do we need to figure out? Essentially showing them the thought process out loud, and involving them in obtaining the solution. This approach helps develop confidence. Repeating creates familiarity.
