I have taught kindergarten through eighth grade special education for the last twenty years. I have had experience working with students who were struggling learners including my own child. Sometimes teaching means showing a different way to do it. I have learned the skills needed for students to learn and remember what they have learned. I have tutored many students and all have been successful in the classes they were being tutored.
Learning needs to have importance to a student. They need to understand why they need to learn the things they are being taught. Then it makes more sense to them. If possible, teach to their strengths. If they like computers, find a website that gives them practice. If they are better writers than listeners, have them dictate and read it back to you. As a gifted student in my primary education, I always excelled in consuming the world around me through knowledge. I wanted to share my love of information with others. After graduating from Florida State University, I received a job at DISC Village in Tallahassee Florida as a Prevention Counselor in the Beta program. This program was school-based and involved working with at-risk middle school students at Wakulla Middle School. My duties included instructing 12-26 students in 6th-8th grade in social skills, behavior improvement, drug prevention, and study groups/tutoring sessions. I developed individualized student plans according to each student's needs.
