I have recently completed student teaching and have earned my teaching certificate as an art specialist. I have had the privilege of working with a diverse range of students at different levels with varying abilities. I have had internships at the high school and elementary levels, with time spent both in the art classroom as well as the special education classroom. As a substitute teacher, I learned to manage an array of classrooms and assumed all duties of a regular classroom teacher. While working for a day camp, I organized and led activities for diverse students ranging from age five to fifteen. All experiences have made me knowledgeable and sensitive to the diverse cultural, social and learning needs of school-age children.
I believe teaching is my calling. I love sharing my enthusiasm for learning with others. I am a great motivator and my goal is to inspire every child ... read more

I truly enjoy helping children reach their full potential. I believe that children who don't understand a subject just haven't had it explained to them in their way of learning and I believe I can find their way. I use patience, understanding, and humor to ease their minds but still am able to convey a sense of high expectation of them. Then, I explain concepts to them in a variety of ways until they can comprehend the subject manner. This includes using diagrams, creating a real-life situations where the concept is applied, drawing analogies that to which they can relate, or developing a game out of the lesson. In the end, it is their success that is my true reward.
I graduated from Monmouth College with a B.A Degree in Mathematics while being a four-year starter and two-year football team captain. I can serve as an example that studies and extracurricular activities can go hand i ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I enjoy teaching a great deal. I love children, and believe every child has the capacity to succeed. My job is not only to give children the content knowledge, but to build their self-esteem and help them realize their own potential. In my experience, students who lack self-esteem often perform poorly in school, even if they know the material. My job is to build their self image while giving them the skills they need to excel.
After graduating from college with a degree in English, I pursued a career in the corporate field. I did not find it satisfying and yearned to return to school to pursue a master's in education. I began substitute teaching in spring of 2007 and completed my student teaching in December 2007. I have been teaching English since I finished student teaching and have been a tutor at Sylvan for some time. I tutor all areas, from beginning to advanced reading and ma ... read more

More About This Tutor...

My background includes teaching at the elementary level and at the adult education level, especially literacy. I spent 10 years directing an adult literacy program where I trained volunteers to be tutors and tutored myself. During that time I took an intensive training course on working with people with learning disabilities. I have worked with ESOL students, as well.
I believe that each child/adult has a learning style unique to them. Finding what works and what makes learning fun, to me, are critical to success, especially to struggling learners. Positive reinforcement and encouragement are critical, as well.
