In 2009, I was a professional tutor(as opposed to a peer-tutor) for the Biology Department of Ulster County Community College, NY, for students struggling with: Bio 100 for non-science majors, Bio 101—an intro course for those planning to continue but lacking a strong background, Bio 105—General Bio required by all biology-related programs, and Bio 109—Human Bio for non-science majors. I noted that if students needed Biology assistance, they often needed Chemistry assistance also, so the basics of that had to be included in order for topics like macromolecules and cellular respiration to make any true sense at all. During High School I taught at a science camp for 3 years. After college I went and lived in China and taught university level ESL for 3 years. I have worked for a few local tutoring organizations in the last 2 years as well as doing private tutoring. I have worked with ages 8-24 for tutoring and teaching and I have taught/tutored English, Math, Science, and history up through the 8th grade level.
I think that it is important to make sure that the student understands the concepts being learned in each subject rather than learning how to do one particular problem. As a Regent's Scholar at UC Davis, I sought to develop skills in both the sciences and the liberal arts. As such, I earned two bachelors degrees, a BS in Civil/Environmental Engineering with an emphasis in Environmental Engineering, and a BA in Japanese. I have an extensive background in math and science, particularly in physics and chemistry, due to the former.
