I have always had an interest in teaching. I graduated from college with my AA while working with the University of Michigan Department of Hospital Finance Training. From there I took some time off to finish my degrees. While going for my BA I worked with the VFW Ladies Auxiliary and was elected President of the Auxiliary and of the District. I am presently finishing up my MBA while working at Convergys as a Trainer for at&t material and presently being trained as a virtual trainer. I have volunteered at an elementary school tutoring while I was in high school. I have also tutored individuals in college level material on a private basis for compensation. My primary strength is mathematics although I am quite skilled in English as well.
I have always possessed a love of helping others to learn. It brings me great joy to witness when an individual grasps a concept which they have been having difficulty with. I tend to use a demonstrator style of teaching by first working through a problem slowly while asking the student questions to ensure that they understand what I am doing. Based on previous experience I have discovered that the same teaching style does not work for every child. I find that explaining each topic and asking the child question gives a clear indication of their understanding. Based on responses to the questions adjustments may be made to address each child's need.
As the daughter of educators, I have been exposed to the education system all my life. As a result of this exposure, I became very interested in tutoring and teaching. I taught for two years as a substitute teacher before attending law school. While in college, I have worked with numerous tutoring programs both paid and volunteering. I worked for two years as a tutor mentor for the Upward Bound Program, where I managed a group of 12 college students that tutored and mentored 75 low-income and first generation students in grades 9-12. Also while in college, I have have had the opportunity to work closely with numerous Metro Public Schools around the Nashville area. Currently I am working with the Martha O'Bryan Center at a Reading Achievement Program Tutor.
I believe that each child has its own learning style, therefore as a tutor you must be able to adapt quickly to the specific needs to every child. I think that the most important thing in tutoring is gaining the attention and confidence that you know what you are doing and talking about. For four years I taught in private schools, where I gave instruction at the middle and high school levels in English, French, Hebrew, computer programming, and office applications (spreadsheets, etc). I taught Math and English for one year at a Huntingdon Learning Center (elementary through high school students). Prior to this I taught French and Linguistics courses at the State University of NY at Albany where I earned a degree in each of those fields. Later I became a database administrator.
