Spanish is one of my top subjects! I am a native speaker of Spanish. I taught at university level in South America. I teach Spanish at a local community college.

I have a bachelor degree in chemistry and a master degree in environmental chemistry. I have more than 25 years of teaching experience. I taught general chemistry at the Faculty of Engineering of Universidad Catolica Andres Bello (Andres Bello Catholic University) and physical chemistry at the Instituto Pedagogico de Caracas (Caracas Pedagogical Institute). I have also been a translator (English/Spanish and Spanish/English) since 1999, so I know the weak points for those that have English as a source language and Spanish as a target language. In Michigan, I have been a Spanish tutor with a lot of students.
I like teaching. I enjoy watching the learning process to see how a student becomes better and better, improving his/her knowledge with time. I am flexible about teaching methods. Some students need a lot of theoretical aspects, then exercises. Other students need only exercises ... read more

I love teaching students of all ages and I recognize that most students do not get the help they need during the school day, which is why it is important for them to get the help they need outside of class. Each student learns differently and it is important for me to figure out a way that works best for him or her so that I can instill the techniques that will help them throughout their entire educational career. I find that many students get frustrated when they don’t understand and if I take the time to help them at their own pace in a teaching style that works best for them school becomes less stressful. I feel that once students feel confident in the classroom they can enjoy learning and that’s what I hope to give my students.

I am a patient and understanding tutor who will take the time to provide the best approach for their learning abilities. Each individual has a unique approach to critical thinking, and using that approach is the best way for that person to learn. I make every attempt to identify a person's perspective so as to shape my teaching for that person in the best possible way. Whether someone is visual-, aural-, logical-, or otherwise-oriented makes a significant difference in the way that person will respond to new information. Above all, I remain positive in my approach, because I realize that every success requires an amount of trial and error behind it, and that nobody is born into their skills though everybody has talent.

As a student I was most drawn to the ideas of Piaget and Gardner. Their teaching philosophies made the most sense to me when it came to teaching. Piaget focused on the idea of play as learning. This may sound strange to some, but a child is always learning, no matter they are doing, due to the fact that so many experiences are totally new to them. When children stacks blocks they are exploring many scientific concepts such as balance, gravity, cause and effect and many others. When children scribble with crayons they are exploring many concepts of art and aesthetics. Gardner describes the idea of multiple intelligences. Everyone is good at some aspects of learning and less so in others. Children learn in many different ways.

A Little Bit About Me...

My tutoring experience started my sophmore year of college, as I was attending EMU. It started in the classroom, helping out classmates, etc. From that moment, people started to ask me for a help on a daily basis. That is when study groups were created, where I would either tutor a group of people or one individual at a time on weekends. I am still tutoring some middle and high schoolers in math and science. I also tutor now college students in Spanish and French.
I can't really say I have a style since I believe in adapting to the student(s) in front of me. Everybody is unique, so I must use different techniques to convey the same message to different students. I am very patient, I try to have my student thinking with me on the journey to find the answer. I can't give the answer away otherwise that student may never learn.

I believe a good instructor does not force students to become good at data recall, nor does he/she simply lord knowledge over the students and assume an ivory tower or bully pulpit mentality. Learning is an active process, one in which the student must be intimately involved. My methods draw on a relationship with the students that identifies their strengths and weaknesses, and uses each to improve the other. My goal is to make students effective at identifying what helps them learn best, so that they can become ACTIVE in the learning process.

My career as an educator began when I started tutoring during high school. At a tutoring agency, I provided personal and small group tutoring for children ages 4-15 in math and reading. When I decided to pursue a degree in education, I gained experience by volunteering at summer school programs. I worked with diverse groups of children in first and fourth grade, in all subject areas. While completing my education courses, I student taught in suburban and semi-urban schools. Through my experiences, I learned how to approach one subject from many different angles in order to best suit the learner. I taught kindergarten, second and third grade in all subject areas. Within my elementary education degree, I specialized in mathematics and social studies, and thus have a strong understanding of teaching concepts in both areas.
