I approach each student as an individual and develop a learning plan that will instill confidence while assuring that the student is able to understand and perform the subject matter skills for academic success. My ability to relate to students and understand their perspective allows me to quickly develop a relationship on which I am able to build a foundation of trust and commitment so that the student actively engages in learning. By using a diagnostic approach, we jointly determine the student’s current level of knowledge and quickly reinforce that foundation before proceeding with instruction on more advanced grade level requirements. I use models and schemas that the student can internalize to teach and then re-teach the structure so that concepts connect and then continue to build skills that advance retention and equip the student with the intellectual map to demonstrate competen ... read more

One of the key elements of tutoring is communication between the tutor and student. Encouraging discussion instead of lecturing of the subject is important. Facilitating good rapport allows me to understand a student’s strengths and weaknesses and allows focus on the weak areas. For example, does the student primarily utilize rote memorization or is he/she capable of a higher level of critical thinking? Someone who is more familiar with memorization as a way of learning can be taught to expand their understanding of the subject if the right questions are asked to them. Someone that demonstrates higher critical thinking skills might do better with repetitive exercises on the subject which encourages focus and application.

A Little Bit About Me...

All students can learn, but in different ways. I, for one, learn best by watching how something is done. I can read about it, or hear a lecture about it, but seeing it helps me understand the subject. This type of teaching would be done with movies, drawing or acting out the situation. In my teaching, I try to use all methods available to me to help the students learn and to use their creativity. I especially try to get students to work in groups and to share their work with each other. I find that pier groups provide the best help in understanding the subject matter. The classroom should be a learning place of activities and fun.

A Little Bit About Me...

For as long as I can remember I have desired to become a teacher. I didn't pursue it initially because I was lured to careers which netted a greater return on my investment, I thought. I later returned to school and continue education eagerly. I am very much able to connect to students with various backgrounds, abilities and challenges. I have developed a style that not only includes direct instruction but hands-on, inquiry based learning that fosters retention and is delivered in a positive, upbeat, fun environment. I love children and working with them comes very natural for me. I was born to teach and it is manifested by the two-way love and respect shown as well as the progress made by my students.
Prior to teaching, I worked as a human resources professional and have learned all phases of human resources with a specialty for recruitment. I have taken the tenets of huma ... read more

I really enjoy tutoring kids in science classes because it is something that interests me and that I understand, so I want anyone who I tutor to know everything that I know.
