A Little Bit About Me...

After I got my BA and Illinois secondary school certification, I pursued my MFA in Playwriting at the University of Utah. I forged a career as a writer and journalist. My liberal education in history and the arts deeply benefited me. Since 1990, I've been a full-time editor for several daily newspapers and magazines, and I continue a profitable freelance writing career. I taught for Loyola University, New Orleans, and two business colleges, and currently teach the composition, computer applications, and speech requirements for a local branch of Kaplan University -- a private business school.
At Loyola University, as director of the Writing Lab, I used peer tutoring and computers to assist students in the composition classes. I developed a love for tutoring and remediation -- for the student who needs one-on-one instruction. I allow the student to be successful. Every lesson must en ... read more

I enjoy mentoring others and giving them the benefit of my knowledge and skills. I have always had a "thirst" for knowledge and enjoy sharing with others. I believe that learning is best accomplished through gaining an ability to analyze a problem logically and following a proscribed methodology to solving problems. I received a very basic but thorough education and believe that if we focus on giving students solid skills that we can then stimulate creativity and investigation. We need to ensure that each student gains the confidence that he/she can learn and grow and succeed.

I have tutored students in language arts, English and foreign languages for 22 years, sometimes independently of any particular classes and sometimes working with students and their teachers simultaneously. When I began teaching, I always requested (and got) the weakest classes. I was convinced, and I still am, that a teacher learns best to teach from the weakest students. I have worked with middle school, high school and university students and pride myself on the number of those students who discovered their own potential and went on to become high performing, successful and independent learners. I believe that becoming an independent learner is one of the most important goals of education. It is the basis for success in any subject matter.

It is important for me to determine what motivates each student to learn, what their interests are and what is important to them. I wanted the student to see how each lesson was valuable to their future success. I always got my students involved in the classroom with open discussions. Each week my students gave a five minute presentation on a subject of their choise, building their self confidence along with their reading, writing and speaking skills.
After twenty years in the financial area I went back to school to obtain a special education credential and found a passion for teaching. A Little Bit About Me...

One of the key elements of tutoring is communication between the tutor and student. Encouraging discussion instead of lecturing of the subject is important. Facilitating good rapport allows me to understand a student’s strengths and weaknesses and allows focus on the weak areas. For example, does the student primarily utilize rote memorization or is he/she capable of a higher level of critical thinking? Someone who is more familiar with memorization as a way of learning can be taught to expand their understanding of the subject if the right questions are asked to them. Someone that demonstrates higher critical thinking skills might do better with repetitive exercises on the subject which encourages focus and application.

More About This Tutor...

I base my teaching on Vygotsky's theory of the Zone of Proximal Development. This theory states that a student can reach a higher level of learning through following the adult's model/example. As the student learns higher level skills, adult guidance is slowly phased out in order to achieve independent functioning. I work with each student's unique abilities and strengths in order to maximize their potential. I also strongly believe that children learn best when they feel comfortable, and confident in their abilities. I strive to make learning fun, while staying structured.
