I follow Gardner's Theory of Learning Styles, students do not learn in the same way, as a tutor you must look for the approach that is right for the student. Also, working with at risk students, who have experienced failure in traditonal school settings, an educator must work on the negative beliefs of the student, including that the student sees themselves as "dumb" and " not able to learn." One or 2 point increase on a TABE test, needs to be recognized. My teaching style varies with audience. I believe that most students need to first understand what a question is asking, (we all assume what is being asked yet never give it a great deal of thought) then proceed to elaborate on the wrong answer. Study technique is to me a critical element in learning. This usually means SQ3R. I am not a talking head but rather an instigator of thought.
