After graduate school in the summer of 2003, I taught art at the Pathfinder Ranch in Idyllwild, CA for ten hours a day for three months with a very limited budget. From 2003-2004, I taught on-line students and acted as an academic enrollment counselor for high school students and their parents at Laurel Springs School, a home school in Ojai, CA. Following my graduation from UHH, I was a substitute teacher and tutor for ESL students for 5 months. I have worked students coming from all types of backgrounds. Recently, I have begun substitute teaching again and have been for an additional 4 months. I enjoy working with the students and seeing them excel.
I enjoy giving the students individual attention. I noticed that often students are ashamed to ask for help or ask questions in front of the class. It is important to walk around the classroom and ask students how they are doing and if they understand the concepts. Many times it only then will a student accept help. My strategy to learning unknown subjects is very close to the same way children learn to walk, by immersion. Everything we learned as children was assimilated through watching, mimicking and attempting. I believe personal experience and learning are very close and in teaching I try to keep that in mind. I find myself a very visually inclined learner and utilize that to help others learn, such as drawing or watching videos. I have found that audio learners do well when given analogies and kinesthetic learners do well with drills or acting out what they have learned all to mimic what their learning so that it might sink in better much like how when we learned to say our first words.
