What a better way to teach your teen than by a teen?

I graduated high school in late October of 2012. I am not currently in college. I am working twords bettering my future. I enjoy helping others and I find it easy. I used to be tutored and I hated it because the tutors seemed to not care if I got it. I make sure the person or people I am tutoring understand and remember how to do what I am asked to teach them. In high school my teachers used to send me to other classes and tutor kids in the middle of class. I am extremely flexable and can help just about anyone I try to teach. I will not say every because no one is perfect and I'm not going to pretend I am.

Chess is one of my top subjects! I can teach students anywhere from beginner up to those starting serious tournament play.

I prefer to work with students one on one, getting a sense of their skill level, and then engaging with them where they are at to help them work towards their own personal goals.
I have been playing chess for close to seven years, many of those at the tournament level. I was a natural when I started, and have only grown in my concepts of the logic and theory of the game. I am also a published author, and can easily teach any student to understand writing in new ways so that they can improve not only the accuracy but the style of their writing.

More About This Tutor...

I love talking to students. I endeavor to let each student know that I care and am willing to go the extra mile to help he, or she, "get it"! I want to "connect". I have a terrific sense of humor, and try to keep my students smiling. I think we learn more, through laughter. I try to keep everyone relaxed. I try to keep everything real. (I've realized that we learn, more easily, when we can apply what we are learning, to our every day lives.) I encourage questions. I want my students to realize that when they are with me, in the classroom, they are safe, i.e., it is OKAY to make mistakes! It's encouraged! How can we learn, if we don't "open up"? I won't give up -- on any student.
I have been writing for 30 years; I have been published over 200 times, in approximately 106 periodicals. In 2008, samples of my earliest writings, as well as recent-front page articles, fro ... read more

I believe the first key to learning is enthusiasm. I like to offer real world applications and display my own enthusiasm to instill a positive attitude towards learning in each child. After that foundation is established, I feel it's necessary to tailor my instruction to each individual student. It's well understood that each of us learn differently. My tutoring experience taught me that patience is vital. It is well worth it to see their joy in working through a problem entirely independently. I also stress the understanding of the concept being studied so that students know why they're doing what they're doing, can solve a larger variety of related problems, and carry that knowledge into their future education.
While attaining a BS in Mathematics at Penn State University, I was heavily involved in peer tutoring. For two semesters I spent 10-20 hours per week working one-on-one wi ... read more

My teaching style changes with my perception of a student's needs. My goal is to show students the path by which they can come to answers themselves. In discussing the subject matter with a student, I can gain a solid understanding of what he or she is capable. Using my patience and ability to effectively describe complicated concepts with analogies and visual aids, I have had great success. I care deeply about students with whom I interact, and I feel greatly rewarded when I have helped a student exceed expectations.
I have enjoyed each experience I have had with teaching, beginning with an informal position as a study group leader in the Genetics course I completed at Penn State University. While working on my MS at the University of Tennessee, I taught lecture and outdoor laboratory sessions for the Ornithology course, which included about 30 students. It's imperative to listen and understand a students challenges. Reviewing their previous work and giving a current test is a good indicator of the situation. I believe in practice and examples as the clearest path to success. I don't hand deliver answers and I make the process towards answers engaging. I make sure the time and place are conducive to active and non-distractive learning. I relay the importance and relevance of the material. I recap previous lessons and try to integrate them into current assignments. I always value and respect people and expect the same of my students.
I have trained students in a laboratory, restaurant and in the home. I graduated from college with honors and have succeeded in statistics, algebra 2, calculus 1, biology 1, chemistry 1, English literature, professional writing, civics, sketching/painting and classical guitar

I am a motivated teacher who desires to see the goals of the student achieved. Therefore, my teaching style takes the shape of the student, where some students are visual learners, whereas others are auditory or kinesthetic learners. Each style of learning has unique characteristics that enable the student to learn much greater when the learning style is known. By offering the student a survey of questions, I am better able to mold my teaching to their learning style and thus help the student reach their greatest potential for the subject at hand.
I have almost 10 years of experience of teaching students for the SAT,GRE, and specific subjects, combined. It started during my freshman year (1999) at Wheaton College (Wheaton, IL).
