A Little Bit About Me...

I am Dyslexic and approach subjects from a different angle. I use a lot of visual techniques to help the understanding of the objective at hand. I try and figure out what works best for the student. I also try to have some fun in the learning process and keep stress and anxiety levels for the student at a minimum.

I've always had a love of learning, and have naturally slipped into an informal tutor role with friends. During high school I took several AP tests and at the same time earned the International Baccalaureate diploma, so I understand very well the pressures involved. My two bachelor's degrees (Computer Science & Engineering) give me a strong foundation in math and science. I have experience as a teaching assistant for undergraduates. In addition, for several summers I participated as a volunteer in my public library's reading program, working one-on-one with children of all ages. I recognize that each meeting is unique, and I have a great amount of patience and empathy. I am calm and open, and I want to do what I can for my students to feel at ease in discussing their writing. Understanding my students' needs and providing a good atmosphere of dialogue are priorities. I think that the written word is very important, and I want to do what I can to help students feel comfortable with this form of communication.
For three years, I have been a writing consultant for students at Rice University who took classes in rhetoric & composition. Some students have been ESL (English as a Second Language). I have tutored at least 25 students total (about 5 per semester), and so I have had experience with tutoring students with a variety of needs.
