I firmly believe that you learn best when you're having fun. Once a topic fascinates you, your mind automatically engages more, which helps you remember better. So I work to draw students in by keeping things interesting, using fun examples, humor, and applying things to areas they will actually care about. I want to make you actually WANT to learn. I have a very adaptable teaching style. If one explanation isn't helpful, I'll try to approach from a different perspective, until we get something that works. For three years, I have been a writing consultant for students at Rice University who took classes in rhetoric & composition. Some students have been ESL (English as a Second Language). I have tutored at least 25 students total (about 5 per semester), and so I have had experience with tutoring students with a variety of needs.
I recognize that each meeting is unique, and I have a great amount of patience and empathy. I am calm and open, and I want to do what I can for my students to feel at ease in discussing their writing. Understanding my students' needs and providing a good atmosphere of dialogue are priorities.
