As a young R.O.T.C cadet, I was very driven to excel in my college education. On my way to becoming a young Army Officer, I earned two bachelor degrees, BA in Communications and BA in Accoutning. My liberal arts educations granted me opportunities to learn and excel in many arenas such as writing, math, science, and the social sciences. I learned the art of effective communication, writing extensive essays and reports, as well as giving many speeches to audiences of various sizes. My teaching style is a mix of traditional and progressive. Traditional because I believe students need a solid foundation of core knowledge to prepare them for future learning. Progressive, because I believe facts should not only be taught in bits and pieces, but should be put into a meaningful context that the student can understand. My area of concentration is math, which can be hard for some students to grasp because of the way they are taught. Memorizing steps alone does not make sense to most students. Math concepts need to be demonstrated from many different angles. This way, a student is more likely to see one they can connect to. Also, problems should be put into relevant terms that interest kids.

I started majoring in biology when I was accepted at The Metropolitan State College of Denver. I have always been successful at teaching children to understand and believe that they can learn anything from hitting a baseball to doing algebra. Each child learns differently, as I have learned from my own children. Starting slowly and building on the fundamentals will open the child's eyes and give them the confidence to succeed.
