Mathematics Teacher Grades 7-12

I am currently working as a substitute teacher in many districts in metro Detroit. I have taught Algebra I, Algebra II, Geometry, Precalculus, and Trigonometry at Oakland Christian School where I did my student teaching internship. Although the majority of my work experience is in business, my selling and people skills are tremendous as a teacher. Asking the "right" questions are the key to sales and can also be applied to teaching.
I like to have the kids be interactive with my my teaching. I have the kids fill out "fill in the blanks" while I am lecturing and I like to have the kids come up to the board and do problems after the lecturing. I also like to apply real world applications when possible.

I am a graduate of Michigan State University and achieved a AS in applied mathematics, along with a BS in both computer science and mathematics. I was a teaching assistant at the university for three years, and assisted in the Learning center for a few more. I taught a few classes at Davenport University in Caro as well. I have tutored several math students before, and have given piano lessons to a number of students as well.
When teaching, I not only want my students to be able to use basic formulas, but have a thorough understanding as well. I am very logical and exact in my thinking process. In 2006 I graduated from the University of Michigan with a BS in Engineering Science. It gave me an understanding in a broad range of mathematical areas as well as areas of other sciences. During that time I worked with volunteer organizations like Salem Housing and Habitat for humanity for three years, which enabled me to mentor a variety of ages. In the last year I've worked with a homeschooling group on a project called, "Leaping Lizards."

The one thing that I observed about the learning process, is that a person quickly grasps a concept if he/she is interested, or the topic is thoughtful and challenges the wit of a person and lastly, a person is very comfortable in learning through his/her friends. Nobody is stupid not to grasp a concept. It is the methodology, technique and feeling of comfort and interest, that is required. Hence I try to be affable and was more involved. My teaching style is very laid back. I know that every student learns differently and I try to accommodate that. When I am working with someone individually, it is easy to see if I need to backtrack and explain a concept another way. In a classroom setting it is sometimes a little more difficult to do this; However, I still want to be my best and for the students to be their best, as this is the only way for them to meet their learning potential. I was a tutor at Lawrence Tech. University as a member of the Tau Beta Pi engineering honor society. We provided tutoring help to fellow students at LTU. Part of my process is to "walk through" an example with the student, showing them a process to solve a given problem. I then assign a problem for them to work out. This resembles a test-like environment where the student can figure out what he/she does not understand.
