In science and math the learner has to practice much like learning to play a musical instrument. It helps if you can bring real world applications into the classroom so it is meaningful to the students otherwise they feel like they are learning something just for the cause of learning.
While completing my teaching degree I taught for three years with troubled youth. Subjects were regents level and the subject was earth science and algebra or course I as it is called in NY. I have also taught Summer school at the Allen Center in South Kortright which can be a tough crowd to work with. During my undergraduate studies I tutored chemistry and biology. I also taught 8th grade physical science in Prince George Virgina.

A Little Bit About Me...

Through teaching at UNH and at Hartwick, I have developed a cogent teaching strategy. First, incorporation of everyday examples is critical for students. When students are shown how concepts discussed in class can be applied to everyday situations, they become more curious and gain better understanding of the material. Second, another of my teaching strategies is to emphasize comprehension of concepts instead of memorization. I caution students against memorizing equations for every individual condition or system. A third goal is to foster an atmosphere of approachability so that students feel comfortable asking questions and seeking help both inside and outside of class.

While attending a small private university in upstate New York, I pursued a degree in Chemistry with a minor in English. I received my Bachelor's degree in 1989 and worked as an assistant engineer in Binghamton NY until I started my masters program at SUNY Cortland. I have held Physics, Earth science, Chemistry and Biology appointments in the years that followed in a variety of School districts throughout the state.
