A Little Bit About Me...

I'm a fifth-teen year old, currently enrolled at Thomas J. Corcoran High School, where I am a sophomore I currently take IB classes and wanted to start tutoring to pass the time and pick up a little extra cash. I'm drug free and have never tasted alcohol. I try to be patient and usually am. I'd prefer to work with children still in elementary or middle school, seeing as I haven't learned everything yet. I know the basic and more to just about everything eighth grade and below. Typically the setting in which the tutoring will take place will be my house in my dining room area and after that the student may watch television until his or her parent or guardian is there to pick them up.

I am currently pursuing a degree in secondary education with a specialization in American History. I have a passion for the subject and for helping students succeed. I just completed my practicum last fall and was active in a 10th grade World History class for about 10 hours a week. During the summer of 2011 I was employed at girl scout camp in Lake George where I planned and taught History lessons for our weekly programs. I also have worked for the Walt Disney Company, in the Magic Kingdom. While I was there, I was able to do American History trivia and tours for the Liberty Square area.

I then completed my bachelors degree while tutoring part time at SUNY Oswego and independently with a high school student in Math and AP physics. Beginning in high school I found myself driven to help children in need. Through my participation in Mercy Action, I raised money for mentally delayed children, and set up numerous barbeques for them. Later, I began tutoring a young brazilian boy in the 5th grade. He needed help with all of his studies, especially math and english. As a political science major, I have gained experienced in essay writing, grammatical skills and research methods.

A Little Bit About Me...

My teaching style will vary depending on the class as a whole or the type of student I am working with individually. In order to be an effective teacher I have seen that I need to be flexible with how I present material to a student. If a student is visual I am able to create diagrams and use props to show a concept rather than only speak the material. Some students need hands on and things like manipulatives in math help create a concrete way to remember a concept, and this is also something I do. In my mind success as a teacher is largely based on the success of the student and I am able to figure out what a specific child needs and adjust my teaching style to that student.
