I began tutoring privately,as well as,for my school's learning center during the early 1990's. I have continued tutoring privately on and off for the past twenty years. I was a substitute teacher in California and Michigan during the 2000's. I also had my own high school level classroom in California for two school years. I was hired on an "Emergency Credential" because I had my BS but no teaching credential. I was laid off due to budget cuts in June of 2003. I also taught "at-risk" elementary age children during the summer for the Glendora Unifed School District in Glendora, CA. I tutored privately for three years from 2005-2008 in south Los Angeles County and north Orange County, CA. I can provide recommendations from these clients if you are interested. My youngest students were in first grade with my oldest students attending college.

I have been a tutor for 23 years and I have taught Adult Basic Education for 12 years. I am still continuing my education to receive a Masters degree and plan to get my PhD. I work for a community college and have done advising, enrollment, testing, phone directory, and student sevices. I have attended many professional development workshops on education.
Critical thinking skills and untraditional ways are what I focus on. However the way someone learns, I will try to set the individual up to show how they learn and work with them. I will implement practices and materials I think will fit the student's profile. I feel a teacher wears many hats and you must be prepared to wear a different one any day.

My comments on tutoring Sociology : A favorite subject.

My method of tutoring is to work with students where they are and add to their skills, to accomplish the final outcome, preferably an "A" or "B." Some students are visual learners and some are informational learners, or some students combine the two. The potential I see in students is what I try to bring out and have them realize they are capable of going a step further, to reach their goal. The importance of education and the students' continuance of same cannot be stressed enough.
I started out tutoring elementary students in basic math and English grammar while I attended college part time in the 1980's. I continued tutoring young students and adults in the 1990's, tutoring Basic Math, Basic and Intermediate Algebra, Basic Geometry, English Composition, Speech, Study Skills and the Sciences. In addition, tips were given to enhance test-taking skills in hard-to-Ace subjects ... read more

I use a variety of teaching styles while instructing students. Alternating between styles helps to keep minds engaged and participation at a maximum. When covering content I use many examples that relate to real life, that way students can relate it to something they have experienced or seen. I also like performing small-scale experiments and labs. I will use power point presentations as well as the overhead for drawings, notes, and discussion. There are many websites that I make use of, the websites that I use are usually hands on and require students to think and solve problems on their own.
I have recently graduated from the University of Michigan-Flint with a Bachelor of Science and teacher certification degree. I student taught during the fall '09 semester. First and foremost, I love learning as well. Not only do I enjoy learning new subjects and ways to work with students, but I enjoy getting to know people and learning from them as well. One of my essential beliefs is respecting the learner and their particular learning style. Helping a student recognize and further their understanding of how they best learn material is crucial for future academic success. Learning should be engaging, filled with variety, and fun!

I enjoy teaching others and helping them excel in their studies. I can relate to younger students because I have a six year old who required extensive help in the area of reading. She was one of my greatest achievements because I had to research a way to communicate on her level of understanding and yet make it interesting and fun. Now instead reading being a weakness it is a strength for her because she has excelled and developed confidence in this area too. I have also helped other children children in the community and I have volunteered on a regular basis at my daughters school helping her classmates with their work.
My teaching style may vary depending on the student. I would have to get a feel of what the child like and dislike about the subject he or she is struggling in. I would also want to obtain a list of goals or expectations from the student's parents in order to impl ... read more

I initially ask the client their preferred method of learning. If they are unsure, I try different approaches in an effort to find one that fits. I find that many people lack confidence, particularly in math. I try to build confidence in the student so that he or she will have faith in their learning ability, both now and in the future.
I developed an interest in tutoring during the beginning of my sophomore year of college, when the math department needed calculus tutors. Although I was not a math major at the time, I enjoyed calculus and decided to apply. Along with tutoring college students, I volunteered at Girls’ Inc to tutor young girls in junior high with numerous subjects. After earning my BA in mathematics, I worked at the learning center of another university tutoring undergrads in various math classes. Most recently, I worked at a high school tutoring 9th-12th gra ... read more

I am firm believer that education is the key to success no matter what the person wants to do with their life. I try my best to make the learning experience fun and fruitful for students so that the material is easier to understand. All students have the ability to be great with the right amount of guidance which is where I come in. It is one thing for me to help a student understand the material at hand, but I also want to make a difference in their lives so that they get into the real world and succeed.

A Little Bit About Me...

My teaching style is not easily defined as each student learns differently. To be an effective teacher I must adapt to the learning style of each student and address their needs accordingly. Although, I do not possess a definite teaching style I do have a specific set of guidelines or practices that I implement in the teaching/tutoring process. For instance, I encourage students to always ask questions. If you don’t understand the approach that I am taking, please stop me so that I can use another approach. This not only helps me do my best job but it also ensures that the student doesn't get frustrated and it establishes a level of trust in the relationship.
With a BA in Communications from Michigan State University and a MBA from the University of Phoenix, I have learned the value of education and understand the weight it holds in society. My experience with tutoring children is ... read more
