While I have no "official" teaching experience, I was frequently required to teach other members of the various teams I was on as well as people from other groups. This involved everything from tutorial presentations to a large and diverse group down to individual tutoring at the table in my office. Most people told me I was pretty good at it.
I first try to determine what level of knowledge my "students" had. Then, building on that, I would add layers until the group I was with understood the material. I would check with them frequently to make sure they understood what we just covered and I allowed questions at any time. If necessary, I would back up and try a different approach. My goal was to make sure they understood the material, whatever it took.

Teaching is a calling which I have loved all my life for which a variety of techniques and strategies are required as each child learns differently. Adaptability, love of learning and children, organization, patience, knowledge, and consideration are all necessary qualities to be a good professor, teacher, or tutor. Good educators do make a world of difference in the process of education, no matter what level of learning.
I have been teaching for twenty-nine years in subjects of English, Literature, Art History, Drawing, World Civilization, and the Humanities. I have earned three degrees, a BA in Social Sciences/English, a MH in Humanities, and a PhD in Fine Arts, which have enabled me to teach a variety of areas. More About This Tutor...

I am a strong believer in student-directed learning. While I am happy to explain concepts and answer specific questions, many students merely ask “Can you show me how to do this?” While a demonstration is useful and necessary the first few times, I will then switch to leading questions to allow the student to recall the appropriate next steps. It is also useful to have the student explain what they DO understand about a problem to better identify what they DON’T understand and why. To add an element of variety, games like timed challenges or linking current events to math problems are relevant “distractions”.
I have always loved mathematics, but never thought I would end up being a teacher. I initially used my strong analytical skills in the business world. As I continued to work with young people through my church and professional jobs lead me to human relations positions, ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I approach teaching as a challenge; as I know not every student learns the same way. I first start by finding a common ground; a level of knowledge if you will. Essentially I find what they know and where do they need help. From there I like to find out something the student has an interest in; thus allowing me to relate subjects to something they find interesting. I also like to constantly reinforce what the student has learned with questions and examples. Finally I relate everything that the student has learned to the real world; which I find gives them a better understanding of what they've learned, and for the importance of it.
I graduated from Purdue University in May of 2007 with a BS degree in Applied Physics. The Applied portion means I took an additional 10 courses on top of the normal physics load. This has given me an in-site on math, physics, chemistry, computer ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I worked at LearningRX as a cognitive skills trainer where I worked with students who were having difficulty in school and I was able to find their areas of difficulty and help build those areas up while also helping with their memory, visual acuity, and processing speed.
I like to have a relationship with the students I tutored where they feel comfortable with me; I want them to be able to tell me the problems they're having with the work and what I can do to help. I like to be friendly with them while still being an authority figure where they want to do their best. I think this type of relationship allows me to push the students to their maximum limit without discouraging them when we're having a difficult session.

My teaching style is one of friendly leadership. Working through problems or lessons with the student by leading them through it, then working it with them side by side while explaining the details helps them achieve the accomplishment of learning without making them feel as if they were just instructed how to do it. Helping a student learn is more than just teaching them a lesson in math, science, or English; it’s about being someone that they can look up to as a role model, being someone that they can learn from in more than just an academic manner, and being someone who is there for them when they need something. Personally, I think students of all ages and academic levels need to be coached and pushed to achieve their full potential.
During college, I changed my major several times, taking numerous classes for each one to determine what I wanted to do with my life. I experi ... read more
