My comments on tutoring Algebra : Received an A in all Algebra classes, including Honors Algebra in high school, College Algebra (taken in high school, and again in 2003 while attending Millikin). I received a special honor on a project in my high school College Algebra class. I have tutored junior high and high school students in algebra, and also tutored for junior high algebra within the Decatur Public School District while working as a Teaching Assistant at Johns Hill Magnet School.

I am a natural teacher - it's what I do when I'm not getting paid. I just like to share knowledge of what, why, when, where, and how. I like the process of learning, and it is a privilege to get to witness, or even positively influence, that process in someone else. I have been paid for my teaching skills for the past 9 years, in various settings, including piano instruction, guitar instruction, tutoring at the Community College in Chemistry, Biology, and Microbiology, as well as assist teaching for the Decatur Public School District. I enjoy working in the educational environment.
I am a visceral teacher. I like to use illustrations whenever possible, videos, photographs, drawings... I like making connections to things that may seem unrelated - I think this strengthens neuro-pathways and thought processes. I also think that laughter stimulates learning, so I like students to ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I found working with young minds in different Early Childhood agencies is one reason for earning my Associate's degree in Early Childhood Education. I then wanted to expand my enjoyment and empower others by obtaining my BSW. I have wanted to be a Social Work ever since high school. Even though, in the last few years I have not worked with the young population, I still enjoy all the things they can teach me.
I try to understand the level of where the children are and build on that. I am patient, considerate, consistant, non-judgmental and feel it is not too early to start teaching or a child to learn. There is so much children can learn and we, as adults, can learn from them.

I believe teaching is my calling. I love sharing my enthusiasm for learning with others. I am a great motivator and my goal is to inspire every child to succeed in order to reach his/her potential. I am patient, knowledgeable, considerate, and understand that every child learns differently. I feel that my creativity allows me to adapt to student needs. I take a constructivist approach to teaching. I believe that students should be active learners and should set their own goals for themselves. I have really enjoyed teaching through coaching. Throughout my coaching career, I have worked with all different types of athletes who each learn things a little bit differently. Because of this, I have been able to practice presenting information in lots of different ways in order to get all types of learners to understand the material.
As a student-athlete at Illinois State University, I learned many invaluable skills. I received a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Physics as well as minors in both Mathematics and Exercise Science. Earning this degree as well as two minors has allowed me to gain a large amount of knowledge in both science and math. Being a student-athlete also taught me great leadership, hard work, teaching and time management skills. In my final year at Illinois State University, I taught a physics lab course. A Little Bit About Me...

I have a BS in psychology with a minor in biology from the University of Illinois. My focus has been on medicine and science, working in adult medical education for over 12 years. I owned a medical education company for five years, working with physicians who would be considered the top two percent in their fields in the world. We developed curriculum for doctors, pharmacists and nurses to teach them about new drugs and new research, all with the hope of improving patient care. During this time, I honed my grammar skills by writing and editing journal articles and medical monographs. Along with my experience in adult education, I have always had a love for children. Shortly after college, I worked in and then ran a before and after-school program for an elementary school. Over the years, I have helped students in an unofficial tutoring capacity in many subjects, from teaching m ... read more

Since I have worked with many different children and people I know that everyone is different. I am confident that I can figure out how someone learns best by trying different ways of teaching until we find the right way. I am very laid back but extremely motivated and I want to push people. I have realized that we all can do more than we think we can as long as we believe and never give up. As long as the child or person sees that someone believes in them then they will believe in themselves.

Throughout my tutoring experience, I noticed oftentimes, students wouldn’t be able completely grasp the concepts the first time when I explained to them. To resolve this problem, I have learned that it is helpful to explain the process of solving the same problem from a different perspective or using a different method. Also, sometimes after I explain a problem to the student, to make sure that the student really understands the concept, I ask the student to explain the same problem back to me or to another student who is also confused about the same problem. As a tutor, I am patient, strict, considerate and I strive to make a difference in all of my students' lives.

My dedication can be seen through the various academic awards I received, such as graduating summa cum laude and being honored as the top organic chemist of my year. I truly enjoy teaching basic physics and mathematics and have been told I am pretty good at it. One of my greatest strengths is the ability to explain a concept in different ways, as of course, people don’t all learn the same way. There’s nothing more rewarding than finding the right explanation and watching the light bulb come on when a student grasps a concept with which they were struggling. Although I am pretty good at classroom presentation, my favorite interaction is one-on-one or in small groups, when teaching can occur that is tailored to an individual. I am very patient and easygoing and like working with people of all ages. If there’s a student that truly wants to learn, I’ll do my best to teach. I haven’t failed yet.

I like to help people in any way I can. I worked as tutor for federally funded TRIO department where I helped economically disadvantaged and first generation college students who had difficulty with the class material. I'm very patient, easy to get along with, and good at developing rapport with my students. I'm good at understanding students’ learning styles and very flexible in changing my teaching styles according to students' needs. I always try to make learning material interesting by relating it to the real life scenarios or other interesting examples with which students can relate to. My goal is to help students succeed in their education so that they could make a difference in their lives.

As a recreation major, I have held a number of jobs working with children of all ages. My first job as a lifeguard and swim instructor helped me understand how to work with children ages three to fifteen and really get a feel for how their brains operate and the proper learning styles to use for each age. Moving on to my job as a camp counselor and staff member at 4-H Memorial Camp in Monticello I really started to familiarize myself with young adults and the way they behave in different settings.
I am a very laid-back, out going person but I never stray from the main goal at hand. I strive to help educate children the best way possible, and would like to make a difference in their life. My education growing up was very positive, and going to a smaller school enabled me to have one on one contact with my educators. I hope to allow the child to feel comfortable with me as a tutor an ... read more
