My teaching style is relaxed, but consistent and firm. I expect assignments to be completed and timely, and spend the time with the student instructing and revising. I ask that parents are a part of the experience. I like to communicate with the family frequently so that they are aware of the assigned tasks and they can make me aware of the student's feelings and needs. It is my opinion that when the family, the teacher/tutor and the student are working together toward a given set of goals and objectives the growth is expedited.
I have been teaching students in classrooms, small group settings and individually for the past seven years. I begin with my students by assessing their strengths and building on them so that students are aware of their successes and are confident to atttempt new material. During my sophomore year in college, I tutored a 10th grader in geometry for two semesters. I also tutored him and one of his peers for one semester in Algebra II. I then got a job as a laboratory teaching assistant. I taught laboratories for non-biology majors for 2 years, which gave me the ability to explain the subject matter in a concise way that the students could understand. I also became proficient in making detailed lesson plans according to the curriculum suggested for each lab session. During my time as a teaching assistant, I also worked as an upper level biology tutor. I tutored majors and non-majors in Biology 103 (non majors), 110 (Biology I), and 111 (Biology II).

A Little Bit About Me...

I started tutoring math when I attended Faulkner State College. I then attended the University of South Alabama where I tutored math and physics. I have tutored all levels of math and also tutored not only physics, but lab activites as well.
I have always been a quick learner when it comes to mathematics. It is something that comes almost natural to me. With that said, I understand that this is not the case for everyone. I feel that a good majority of people hate math because they don't understand math, and because they don't understand math right away, they don't try to understand it. I had a wise professor once tell me, "Math isn't difficult; there is no such thing as difficult math. It just seems difficult because you haven't learned it yet". I think math can be easy for anyone, they just have to learn it first.

I am still developing a teaching style. However, I know from personal experience that constructing knowledge requires much more than reading a textbook. All learners have unique learning styles that influence learning success. A student’s favored learning style is a valuable resource for a tutor, allowing the student to discover more about the world and themselves while simultaneously developing a joy for learning. I use informal assessments to instruct my instruction, and assist students to monitor their own learning progress. My strongest teaching tools are good listening skills, patience and perseverance, and a desire to find each student’s academic and creative strengths.
