A Little Bit About Me...

From both my tutoring and teaching experience, I have concluded that each individual learns differently; therefore, I believe it is essential for teachers to discover each student’s learning style and teach them accordingly. I also strongly believe that learning should be a rewarding, pleasant, and even fun experience. Furthermore, I know that each and every student is able to learn; however, often times it is necessary to instill a desire to learn in them. This can be done by illustrating a passion for learning. A Little Bit About Me...

I try to keep the material fresh and I avoid boredom and repetition at all costs. One of my best tools to connect with a young person is through humor. If the student feels relaxed they are more likely to absorb the information. I also use reverse psychology to turn the tables so they actually find themselves teaching me the material. This has been a successful tool with children I have mentored as well as my own children.
I began teaching/tutoring while in graduate school. I tutored undergrads in sociology, psychology, and social statistics. I also taught driver's education to high school students while in grad school. After ten years working in law enforcement, I switched to social services and I have been mentoring children in foster care for the past twenty years.

I have always valued the importance of a quality education and have encouraged friends with no college ambition to start working on their degrees. I am not, however, an elitist. I think every endeavor is a learning experience, but there are basic skills that are necessary to be successful, such as grammar, spelling, and professionalism. My experience in formal teaching is mostly in college-level public speaking and coaching Little League, but I am a proficient and tedious writer.
