I got my math Diploma when I was 16. I was tutoring math during high school to my classmates and my friends. I am in college right now but I still teach math to my sister who is in 9th grade, and my mom who is in college right now. I have experience of teaching math but I never really get paid for that and I was not like a real employee.

I entered Virginia Tech as an honors math and physics student and graduated in three years with my BS in physics. At the moment I am trying to decide if I would like to go to grad school to continue on to something else, hopefully with math and physic as at least peripherally relevant. I have never taught a class and have tutored in only in a limited capacity. I however was apart of Virginia Tech's first Physics education class and program and found that I really actually enjoy teaching for teaching's sake. I hope that my limited experience won't scare people away; I am very passionate about these subjects and I would enjoy building up my experience and resume so that I can become an even better educator.
My major complaint with the current pedagogy of STEM fields is there focus on teaching students to be able to produce answers so a slew of canned and frankly uninteresting pro ... read more

Teaching science is not about teaching facts. Science is based on theories, which evolve through the process of discovery. Thus, it is important to teach a student not what to think, but how to think. With little formal teaching experience, my philosophy draws on what I have liked in my teachers. First, and foremost, is enthusiasm. A professor who is clearly excited by the subject is more likely to spark excitement in the students. Second, it is important to relate to the students on a more personal level. This needs to occur in both directions. I believe the students need to see me as more than a teacher providing the information, but as a scientist and a person with my own views.

After graduating college with a degree in Finance I pursued careers in that field which were very rewarding. My wife is a school adminsitrator and I thought a career in teaching might be a nice change as the school schedule appeared generous. I tried it and what happened next can best be expressed as; "a calling". I have taught mathematics at the middle thru high school levels encompassing Pre-Algebra thru Calculus. I have students attending Stanford, Harvard, Wake Forest, the University of North Carolina and George Mason, just to name a few.
My teaching style revolves around the student's learning style though I prefer to be "hands on". I am a firm believer that grades reflect effort. Because most students have difficulty in math or just do not enjoy it, my personality becomes an asset. Learning should be an enjoyable experience and it is most enjoyable when a student understands ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

Throughout my education, I have excelled in every subject, particularly science and math. During college, I frequently studied in groups and assisted many classmates who were struggling. Some even began coming to me with questions instead of going to the professor because my explanations were more easily understood. For two years during college, I served as a tutor for the Athletics Department. While I more often tutored chemistry, I also tutored biology and math. During graduate school, I was selected as a Teaching Assistant for a Chemical Oceanography class. I also worked for two summers as a Science Mentor for an oceanography camp designed for students entering 9th grade. This included classroom teaching as well as teaching during field trips. In addition, I worked for one year as a Teaching Assistant/Tutor for a college-level general chemistry class.
I especially enjoy ... read more

More About This Tutor...

I have a good understanding in math and its applications. I do not have formal tutoring experience as an adult, but have taken a break from my career in business to stay home and take care of my children, currently 5 and 7 years old. I have helped my daughter with most of her math concepts and homework and she is one of the best in her class, and I have helped both with their English and Spanish vocabulary and pronunciation. I would say I spend about 2 hours daily (during school days) teaching them and making sure they understand the concepts taught in school. In high school, I was also a member of Mu Alpha Theta (Math honor society), and volunteered as a math mentor after school for 1 year.
My best trait as a tutor is that I will not give up on my student, even if they have given up on themselves. It is my belief that most concepts can be understood if taught properly, and r ... read more

I recently graduated with a bachelor of science degree in mechanical engineering from Georgia Tech. At Tech, I volunteered three hours per week to tutor SAT's to immigrant students for two years at AAYA, Asian American Youth Alliance. For one semester, I was a paid mathematics tutor for at-risk high school students for the Georgia Tech CEISMC Mentoring Program. With my degree and tutoring experience, I assure you I will be familiar with all levels of math subjects and the challenges that students usually have in studying math. More importantly, I know how to overcome those challenges and to enjoy good results. It's rewarding to hear students say, "Oh, I understand that now!"
My teaching style varies according to the type of student. I have tutored at-risk students with attention and behavioral issues. With these types of students, they are indifferent about math, and I have ... read more
