I try to avoid giving students an answer immediately, but rather try to pry the answer out of them with questions so that they can figure out the answer themselves. I see teaching as helping/forcing the student to think things out and make discoveries for themselves, not just being spoon-fed information. Of course, sometimes it is necessary to tell students the answer if all else fails (after all, it is important that learning is not a frustrating activity for the student), and rote memorization can be a valuable tool every now and then. What strikes me most as I look back at my education is how much of an impact a teacher can have when they make their subject relevant to their students. When I am teaching I try to find out what motivates each student as a person, in addition to what is motivating them to take the class.
