Casual and empathetic. I struggled with writing in high school and overcame my problems to become an editor at the top level of the book publishing industry and a college instructor on writing. I use my struggle to show my students how they too can achieve their goals.

Most of my career has involved some level of teachng or training. I trained new volunteers during the Peace Corps, I taught rural Tunisian families how to use available resources to improve their lives, training natural education instructors and volunteers at the Wells Reserve, traqining and coordinating volunteers within my roles as Executive Director, completing all course requirements for my Maine Teacher Certification, obtaining Ed. Tech III, Highly Qualified status in Maine, and substitute teaching, and now in my role as Title I, Ed. Tech II at Valley View Community School in Farmington, NH where I work extensively with children with special needs.
I believe that questions are more powerful teaching tools than simply delivering answers. I do not wish to teach my students WHAT to think; my goal is to help students learn HOW to think, and to develop a pssion for learning which ... read more

More About This Tutor...

As a recent graduate from Salem State College, I have earned my BA degree in English, with a minor in History. Writing and reading is something I am very passionate about. I have learned different forms of writing, such as analytical, persuassive, reading responses, creative, and so on. With that experience, I have learned grammatical rules for writing that was very important to my success. I have never tutored, but I feel that with my knowledge or writing and reading can be useful to someone who is having difficulties in that area. I work very well one on one and believe I can help someone.
I've always enjoyed helping someone else. There is a certain satisfaction after seeing the look on their face of appreciation. I believe that one on one assistance is very helpful for students who are struggling because sometimes they are afriad to raise questions in the classroom, in fe ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I graduated in 2009 with my BA in English and am currently pursuing my masters in writing. While at the undergraduate level I learned about all manner of skill in writing from research papers to poetry. I am currently finishing up a Teaching Writing course at the graduate level at the University of New Hampshire. Taking this course has certainly broadened my understanding of writing and more importantly how to teach it. For the spring semester I am continuing on with a Teaching Secondary English course, also at the graduate level. I have certainly helped guide many of my peers and friends with countless papers which along with my own experience has provided me with an expansive knowledge of how to write and how to teach writing.
I love being able to help a student or peer develop and implement new knowledge. I like to take the approach of teaching skill not just content. I am pati ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

Previous students have often remarked on my practical teaching style, relying on real world examples and explanations for business and mathematics. The only way to remember information long term is to relate it to something tangible, especially in subjects like statistics and economics. Relating the ephemeral to the practical is important, and later allows for the information to be used in a real world setting much, much easier.
I have tutored people since third grade, and have recently graduated with my masters in business administration with honors. As consistently as I have tutored, I have also excelled in an academic atmosphere and would love to share my knowledge of test taking skills and subject knowledge. I have had a wide focus throughout my experiences, with emphasis on statistics, essay writing, and business theory, and I have also done university research on neurophy ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I have 12 years of full time high school English teaching experience. Beyond that, I taught theatre at the college level for four years and worked as a teaching artist in New York City for four more. My Bachelor of Science in English/Speech/Theatre helped me to establish a career in education that is characterized by a driving passion for excellence and a creative learning technique that is second to none.
My teaching style adapts to the needs of each individual student. I am very specific in terms of direction, thorough when it comes to facts and details, challenging to promote excellence and fair in evaluation. Working with children has always been my passion. I feel as though it is important to engage all different types of learners and to make them feel as if the classroom is a place where everyone is safe and included. I have worked extensively in the past with children that have Autism. I believe that all children, despite any disability, are capable of being successful students as long as they are given the right tools and the support that is necessary.
Coming from a family of teachers, the importance of education has always been stressed to me. The emphasis was placed not only on succeeding academically, but also to gain a true understanding of the subject matter. A Little Bit About Me...

I have two years of experience teaching adults in college-level and public adult education settings. Additionally, I have about 3 years of experience working with children from infancy to adolescence and was a lead after-school teacher. My professional business background, entrepreneurial spirit and freelance writing career have aided in the practical development of my English, grammar, financial planning, customer service, sales and marketing skills.
Teaching is a facilitating process. I believe it is my job to aide the student in developing a more solid understanding of the coursework in front of them. This may involve explaining the same concept to the child in a variety of ways to help them understand. The child may also just require a patient instructor who is willing to keep practicing until they have reached the mastery stage of learning. Whatever the case may ... read more

I believe any child can learn. My passion is to help your child become successful by helping them to read with comprehension, write clearly, compute accurately, think, reason, and use information to solve problems; and allow them to become responsible, independent learners. I believe in the hands-on approach to teaching and learning and use the best practices to select the best learning method. I want to make a difference in the lives of all the children I come in contact with and teach; to help them take that first step towards making their dreams and goals a reality.
As a valued member of the ANA faculty and team I continually worked to lift the standards and proficiency of all the students that I taught both directly and indirectly to prepare them for the rigors of high school and college. As the English Department Chair I mentored and provided leadership to the staff I s ... read more

The temptation as instructor is to simply restructure the way in which a student learns in order to fit your view, and those I have helped encourage such behavior. Guidance, suggestions, and allusions as to how a student can improve and understand is a better alternative. Simply doing the work for the student has little value in regards to education. A fine balance must be struck between open ended comments of little use and high jacking creativity through re-working large portions of work. My policy is to make the student aware of their shortcomings, explain my reasoning, and use enigmatic reserve in telling them how to correct errors. Unless the mistake is simple, I hold back on literally telling them what to do. .
As an undergraduate, my focus for studies in English were both Critical Literary Analysis and Creative Writing. Analytical writing was stressed heavily, giving me ... read more

It has been my experience that most students appreciate an opportunity to sit quietly and think carefully over a problem. Time for a short burst of creative and intense scrutiny is a rare luxury for most of my highly-stimulated students. My philosophy is that learning is a student's job and they should give that job the attention it deserves. I encourage my students to explore while learning but believe in providing a structure and models in which to do so. I am firm in my expectations of my students and insist that they work just as hard as I do myself.
With over 18 years of experience in Education I am capable of teaching to a variety of students and learning styles. My particular areas of expertise are composition, grammar, English literature (Shakespeare specialization), Latin, and American history.
