More About This Tutor...

As a Weber State graduate, I majored in Zoology and minored in Chemistry. Even though science has always been a passion of mine, I am very knowledgeable in math. During my undergraduate studies, I have gained even more experience and improved on my grammatical skills. I had the opportunity to be an Anatomy lab instructor for three semesters. Additionally, I have had the opportunity to tutor my wife with her math. At first, this was a challenge. Math is a subject where one cannot only rely on memory. I found that it's best to be very patient and teach the processes of mathematic principles, rather than just assume the person whom you're tutoring knows these processes.
I never realized exactly why people go into teaching until I gained first hand experience. Teaching is one of the most rewarding things one can do as a profession. When I first started lab instructing, I immedia ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I really enjoy teaching because I am passionate about the things that I am teaching and like to encourage passion for learning in others. I always strive to show my students the connection between the work they do in the classroom and its connection to society and the world as a whole. I feel that encouraging such a relationship with the work makes students more willing to seek out knowledge in and out of the classroom.
I completed my BA in English at the University of Utah in two and a half years in order to begin work on my MA in English as quickly as possible. In the half year between completing my BA and beginning my MA, I was a substitute teacher in the Jordan School District in Sandy, UT. I have just finished my first year in the English MA program at Boston College where I was also a tutor at the Connors Family Learning Center. In addition to school and tutoring, I also ... read more

Because I have spent time at commercial tutoring centers, I know how to identify what type of learner your student is and what tools I can use to help them understand the abstract concepts math and science utilize. I also have the ability to tutor 2-3 students at a time in different subjects so feel free to ask about tutoring for multiple students in one session. I understand my role as a tutor is not just to get the student's homework done, it's to make sure your student knows the concepts and can perform when it's test time. They will not just improve their grade in the class we are tutoring in; they will build a foundation for success in future classes as well.

I believe that children are born smart. Some of them have special learning challenges and some have been taught to believe that they are not smart. By treating children as though they are intelligent and providing encouragement and learning opportunities, I have seen children grow and progress in almost astonishing ways. The sparkle in a child's eyes when they finally "get it" is the best paycheck.
After finishing my Masters Degree in Education I taught one year in a private school then opened my own business tutoring primarily homeschool students during the school year. The students I have worked with are primarily ages 11-18, but my experience with my own children includes the primary grades. I have tutored most subjects including reading, writing, science, history and math (through algebra).

My tutoring style is based on three principles: patience, excitement for the subject and alternative explanations. Through my tutoring experience and having children of my own I have been able to develop the patience to allow students to work through problems and gain their own understanding even when the process is lengthy. I enjoy math and the physical sciences and believe that bringing that excitement to the tutoring situation helps to motivate the student and give them the energy to succeed. Over many years and experiences I have gathered an assortment of alternative approaches for many of the more difficult concepts. I have found that presenting the same material in a different way can facilitate understanding tremendously.

I have a Master of Arts degree in English from Utah State University and have taught EFL overseas and within the US. Recently (from 07-08), I worked as a Math Tutor for challenged fifth graders and also for Kindergarteners part-time at Lincoln Elementary in Layton while my son was in pre-school. I am competent in elementary math and sincerely enjoy helping others to find the inherent beauty of numbers and what they can do.
I love kids - they are often sweet, funny, easily impressed and are a great audience. I know that it is possible to make learning fun through a close, interactive relationship with a student - showing and guiding them through your own discovery of the subject. There have been times when I could feel one of my students learning; it is always a smile-provoking moment and I treasure every one.

A Little Bit About Me...

I received my BS in Electrical Engineering in December. I was one of two who graduated under the Honor's Program and maintained a 3.72 GPA. I've been tutoring math ever since my second semester in college and even while I was in high school. I've taken Calculus 3, differential equations, linear algebra, and discrete mathematics and received an A in each of them. I have a great deal of experience along with a sound background in mathematics.
When it comes to math, there is always more than one way to attack the problem at hand and each method appeals to different students. I usually start off with one and I can quickly tell if another would be more effective for each individual since I've noticed everyone has different styles of learning. I do believe everything mathematical can be taught and learned - there are no lost causes when it comes to math.

For the last two years I have enjoyed working at the Brigham Young University -Hawaii Reading Writing Center as a tutor and center manager. I absolutely love working with kids and teens. I believe that all children want to experience success, but each might define "success" a little bit differently. I am willing to take the time to find out what motivates each individual student and go the extra mile to help them. I am a firm believer in experiential education and try to relate what a student is learning in class to something they love, engaging and involving them in the process as much as possible. As a tutor, I do my best to make things fun while also making progress.
I recently finished a double-major in college and maintained a GPA of 3.75. I took many education courses throughout my college career in obtaining my degree in Childrens' Studies. I have helped tutor in biology, earth science, social studies, English, algebra, reading, and Spanish.

I love teaching children and finding ways of making learning come alive for them. I am always looking for creative ways to help students connect with what they are learning. For example, as a summative project in our unit on circuit electricity, my students built small, electric go-karts. Additionally, I am firmly committed to establishing a strong foundation of academic knowledge for my students. I believe students need to be directly taught the academic skills necessary to be successful in life.
As a 5th grade bilingual teacher, I have a strong commitment to each of my students. I tutor students outside of classroom time in order to ensure that they are successful. I have experience tutoring students in mathematics and reading. My graduate work consisted of an MA in teaching with an emphasis on research. My teaching style varies depending on the type of students I am teaching to because I believe that each student has a particular learning style that they find easier. I think that it is important to find the types of learning that each student finds easiest to understand, and tailor the course so that it works well with their particular learning abilities. This can easily be done in a classroom setting as well as an individual basis. In either case, while I am teaching I think that it is important to understand the topic we are on before moving to the next one. Slowing down to completely grasp each idea helps students to gain confidence in their learning ability, and actually helps the classroom or individual to progress much faster overall. Giving students a hope for their future ability to learn is one of the best things I can do for them.

I love working with students one on one to develop a tailored approach that will work best for the student.
