The motto of the Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society is "Love of learning is the guide of life". I live my own life by this ideal, and I try my best to instill a love of learning in my students. Too many students believe, indeed have been taught, that math is just a series of formulas and recipes to be learned and memorized. Understanding concepts doesn’t seem to be necessary or even desirable. No wonder students “hate” math! I believe that understanding important concepts is essential to learning math, and that obtaining the "right answer" is less important than trying to understand a problem and “discovering” a method to solve it, even if that method is “not what the teacher is looking for.”

It seemed I was always studying for something during the first 25 years of my life. First it was accounting in college followed by the CPA exam and then graduate school at night. I always enjoyed being a student and took advanced math classes including calculus with analytic geometry I & II. I am an avid reader and believe the book is always better than the movie!!
