I am a voluntary tutor for students after school and I have been successfully doing that for a year now. I've found the best way to teach someone a new way of looking at something is to understand how they currently perceive it. I assess the student's level of mastery by listening to parents, communicating with the student (in whatever appropriate way needed) and then doing some basic testing.
