A Little Bit About Me...

I have master’s degrees in Mathematics and Statistics with related work in Physics and Astronomy. My 20 years in education includes teaching at various colleges and high schools providing instruction in Statistics, Physics, Calculus and College Algebra. One of my more gratifying experiences was as a Learning Center Instructor working one-on-one with students in a wide variety of subjects. My teaching style can be called old-fashioned: the best results come from patient, focused, disciplined time on task. To learn math one must work a variety of problems, and practice them diligently. My strength as a tutor is my ability to explain the algorithms in a way that students can easily grasp. This includes the vitally important requirement of why the problem is worked the way it is, not simply how.
I taught high-school math for 14 years, everything from Pre-Algebra to Calculus, in both public and private schools. I also have extensive writing experience, including for many newspapers, and am currently teaching Political Science at the Community-College level. Thus, I could tutor math, and/or any subject or assignment that required verbal and writing skills. I tutored UTK athletes in math and philosophy, and proctored Pre-Calculus at UTK as well.

A Little Bit About Me...

I believe learning is about confidence. I have seen numerous students doing poorly in courses because they were convinced that they were not capable of learning the subject matter. Small successes help to build confidence in order to move on to the subsequent challenges. I believe in starting with the basics, and making sure that the students truly grasps the subject matter before moving to more difficult concepts. Often, it takes several different approaches before a student is able to understand the concept.
