A total learning experience

Since coming to the Charlotte region in 1996, I have had a wide variety of experiences as a language teacher, having taught in public, private, homeschool, summer school and tutoring situations. Although my primary focus is teaching French, I have also had the opportunity to equip students in Spanish I and II to continue with their language studies. Passionate about providing students with cross-cultural experiences, I have been the lead teacher on five different homestay trips to France with students from grades 5-11, as well as coordinated homestays for visiting French students with families in the Charlotte area. I have also coordinated five different "immersion camps" for students, ranging in age from 5-17, creating for students a more "hands-on" approach to learning language.
I believe every student can learn, and as a result incorporate a variety of learning techniques to ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

Once I have an understanding of what a student is capable of I like to push them to go past their "comfort zone" in learning. It helps them understand that what may look difficult, may not always be so and that they only way to find out is to learn it. Also, I do not teach study habits. Instead I like to see what a students current habits are and work on expanding those habits so that the child does not get frustrated and overwhelmed. It is easier to learn more from current knowledge than try to teach a whole new way. After all, most students study habits are based on how their teacher has taught them, and I wouldn't go against what the teacher has taught. The point of tutoring is to help a child understand the work they are currently doing in school. It is my job to make sure that happens. I will want to speak with your child to determine the best way to teach them.

I have tutored fellow classmates in the past throughtout middle school and high school. Teaching is an art that needs to be perfected based on each individual child’s needs. I am a very demanding teacher, but at the same time always fair and give positive reinforcement while the student is learning and of course, when they have obtained their goals. I teach using a variety of strategies, but feel that hands on learning works best for most students, especially those in a tutoring atmosphere. Therefore, many manipulatives for just about any concept are used in order to turn a problem into the solution.
In my 2nd year of teaching, I have enjoyed the experiences that have came my way due to my students. I enjoy going to work daily and leave almost everyday with a sense of gratification because of the accomplishments I help my students achieve. A Little Bit About Me...

I graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Criminal Justice with minors in African American Studies and Sociology from The University of North Carolina at Charlotte. While studying at UNCC, composing papers on a variety of subjects enhanced my grammar and sentence structure. Being a Lead teacher at Dixon Academy, supplied me with experience in interacting with both children and their parents from diverse behavioral, cultural, and economic backgrounds. In addition, it was my goal to make sure that my students completed their homework before leaving the center. Helping my children achieve that goal allowed me to apply my knowledge in mathematics, English, art, and science.
The sense of achievement that can be seen on a child’s face after mastering the unknown is why I am passionate about teaching. I am flexible, understanding, and compassionate. I believe that surrounding the chi ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

Teaching social studies for so many years has allowed me to implement a great variety of teaching strategies, such as graphic organizers, cooperative learning, note-taking guides, debates, Socratic seminars, gallery walks, dramatic presentations, roundtable writing, independent studies, multi-media presentations, etc. As a middle school teacher, I learned quickly how to relate subject areas to the everyday lives of middle-schoolers. I am able to create assignments to cater to all of the multiple intelligences. I have an ability to break down abstract concepts in ways an early adolescent can understand. I strive for excellence in teaching, and I expect the same from my students, regardless of background. Most of all, I have discovered that it is true that students "don't care what you know until they know that you care."
