A Little Bit About Me...

During my year as an AmeriCorps VISTA at the Earth Ethics Institute, a non-profit organization at Miami Dade College, I was responsible for the successful execution of five high-profile programs. I strengthened my ability to multitask and was able to effectively implement each program’s components at their full potential and capabilities. I became accustomed to working independently under strict deadlines and overseeing many service-learning college students who assisted with events. As many of these service-learners regarded me as a role-model, I committed myself to bringing out their full potentials while mentoring them through their college experiences. I was considered the unofficial technological assistant of my workplace due to my proficiency at Microsoft Office and my ability to work at an exceedingly fast pace. In addition to this, my co-workers often request that I overview ... read more

My comments on tutoring Marine Biology : Was a Marine Biology minor in college. I also worked for over a year and half as a Marine Mammal Biologist.

I obtained a B.S. in Biology, with a concentration in aquatic science, from Wittenberg University in 2006. During my undergraduate studies, I tutored elementary students in math and science twice a week for two years. After college, I moved into the marine science profession. In August of 2008, I started teaching High School Biology I, Earth and Space Science, and Physical Science to students in Polk County. In addition, after school hours were spent with two students taking AP Biology classes. Both students achieved a 4 or higher on their placement exams. My tutored students reported an increase in their ability to record class notes, study, and take tests. My previous tutoring experiences have included subjects such as; elementary science, elementary math, Algebra (I & II), Geometry, Pre- Calculus, Anatomy, Physiology, Biology (both College and HS level), HS Chemistry, basic w ... read more

I am an Elementary Education Major at the University of Florida and have helped many students succeed in all subject areas, with a strong focus on Elementary Education. Some subjects that I particularly tutor in include: math, science, english, social studies, and language arts. I also supply a student with supplemental material I feel will help them learn better and at their own, individual pace. For instance, I believe that some students may learn better through visual exercises, and them others may learn through auditory (hearing) exercises. Either way, I try to figure out what a students learning style is and work on that with a student.

Learning can and is fun! As a child my family made learning an ongoing process of discovery through nature, crafts, musicals, concerts, theater, museums and reading. I believe that one never stops learning and that everyone has something they can teach you if you open yourself up. Learning is best done through discovering and sharing your discoveries with others. It would be my hope to instill this passion to learn reguardless of the subject matter! I also know that not every approach of method will work for everyone. The secret is finding the way overcome the hurdles so the mastery of the subject occurs without unneeded stress and self defeat. I enjoy teaching and tutoring students because I really gain a high sense of gratitude in seeing a new level of understanding come from my students. And my teaching style is driven by this. First I attempt to teach things according to how I understand them. Second when a student doesn't understand something I think it's a waste of time to try to just repeat myself and hope they get it the second time. As Einstein said: “Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.” Rather I will flip a concept around so the student can attempt to understand it differently, or draw images or make analogies to other concepts the student already understands, until there is understanding.
I recently graduated from Appalachian State University with a degree in Psychology with a minor in Chemistry where I was educated to understand learning and how the human mind ... read more

I like the child to feel comfortable with me to where they are at ease and readily ask questions. I prefer to ask the student leading questions to aide them in coming to the conclusion on their own as opposed to simply telling them information. After a few questions have been answered then I am able to help them with the details of problem and a help them build a method for solving similar problems in the future.
I have a BS degree in Interdisciplinary Natural Science and a Minor in Public Health. I worked for USF Housing and Residential Education. I also was a Peer Leader for Chemistry where I was basically a Teaching Assistant and led two sections by myself.
