A Little Bit About Me...

As the daughter of two educators, I spent my childhood immersed in educational values. My passion for education lead me to attend Western Washington University where I earned my Bachelor of Arts in Secondary Education and History. I tutored Geometry and worked in several classrooms at both the high school and middle school level throughout my time at Western. After graduation, I taught seventh grade Medieval World History at Alderwood Middle School in the Edmonds School District. For as long as I can remember I have loved to learn. Through college I tutored in psychology, english, the arts, statistical math, and certain classifications of sciences. My favorites were psychology and english because of the freedom you can give due to interpretaional material.
As a psychology major I was fascinated with how the mind works in all arenas. I learned the various methodologies used in teaching people and found in my tutoring that finding a way to present even the most difficult material in a manner to make it understandable is greatly satisfying. Through tutoring and teaching others I gained a higher comprehension of the material at hand and learned more about both myself and people in general. I firmly believe that there's no such thing as an idea or topic that can not be taught to someone who wants to learn regardless of academic leveling.

Over the last 15 years, I have worked in various different areas. First, I taught adult ESL, and had occasional tutoring gigs with Russian speakers learning English, and some English speakers learning Russian. Currently, I work as a special education teacher. Part of my job is to work in small ratios with honors students who have disabilities. This "study skills" class often requires one-on-one tutoring.
As it has evolved over the years, my teaching style has become a mix of facilitation and direct instruction, with the goal always being the student's making his own discovery. I was trained in the Socratic style, which seems to match well with inquiry-based learning, and that is how my classes usually end up. I introduce activities, then gradually release them to the students to lead.
