When working with students one-on-one, I try to find out exactly where the next step needed for the student to progress would be, and then work to achieve an understanding of the foundational material that needs to be understood and applied to achieve success, and then move on from there.
As a Spanish teacher, I have an MA in Spanish, and have worked as a Spanish teacher at both the secondary and post-secondary levels. As a foster parent, I tutored our first child as he progressed through kindergarten and the first grade. His previous school experience was lacking at best, and he had little confidence in his scholastic ability. I was able to pinpoint his natural aptitude--mathematics--and use it to help not only boost his self-esteem regarding academics, but also to tailor my approach to his other subjects as well.
