A Little Bit About Me...

I have always preferred an interactive teaching style. At times in Mongolia I found the language barrier to be inhibiting the learning of the students. This caused me to explore different teaching methods which I otherwise would have never considered. For example, I often chose to teach language by acting out the word or phrase, or having a student act it out. However, there were some classes that were not responsive to this type of teaching and, as a result I resorted to what I had previously considered arcane and authoritarian: repetitious call and response, and by rote. These methods proved to be effective for certain classes. As a result, I am now open to any possible number of teaching methods.
My bachelor's degree from University of Missouri-Columbia is in Political Science. I also minored in Art History. I have done extensive research in each of these areas and feel ... read more

I have many years of experience working with students of all ages and abilities. I have taught in public schools, in private schools, with troubled and behavior problem youth, incarcerated youths (13-20 years of age), as well as home-schooled students, small group, and one-on-one. I have tutored students in all levels of math, science, English, Spanish, social studies, and history. I also have experience with SAT and ACT prep.
I truly enjoy what I do. I love enabling students to achieve their goals, become self sufficient, and successful. I teach to the individual, looking for individual strengths and weaknesses; then modify my approach to meet the needs of the individual student. My goal is to enable the student to be and do their best.

A Little Bit About Me...

Throughout my college experience, I have had multiple chances to volunteer as a classroom aide, tutor, and student teach. As I am certified to teach grades K through 8, I have taken college courses in all subject areas. I have pursued in greater detail language arts, mathematics, and social science in order to earn my middle school endorsements. I have tutored students from elementary grades up through algebra 2. I have begun learning Mandarin, Spanish, and Polish. Also, I have a passion for learning which I hope to impart on my students. I was a classroom aide for a first and third grade classroom, and student taught in a third and fourth grade classroom.
I believe in a teaching approach that takes into consideration each child's unique culture. Not only is culturally appropriate teaching beneficial, it's necessary! I plan to implement interactive learning and integrate curriculum ... read more

Teaching is a passion; an ideology focused on each student’s potential. It can be a challenge, but the belief that every student can learn drives me to persistently push students to discover this fact about themselves. True learning is about self-discovery and attaching self-meaning to content. The way I teach is built as a series of measurable steps which guide my students to find the lesson themselves. I engage my students in discussion about what they are learning and their interpretations of it. I encourage respectful debate to allow students to experiment with new found knowledge and for them to gain ownership of what they have learned. True learning is making knowledge a part of yourself, and my goal is to help students do that.
I earned a B.S. in Secondary Education focusing on literacy and written expression, as well as Special Education methodology. This foundation allows ... read more

As a Graduate Teaching Fellow (GTF) in the Philosophy Department at the University of Oregon, I assist faculty by running two weekly 50-min discussion sections of approximately 30 students, and I am responsible for evaluating these sixty students' work for the class, particularly written work, and exams. This year I have acted as a GTF in the following courses: Phil 110 (Human Nature), Phil 102 (Ethics), and PHil 170 (Philosophy of Love and Sex). As a Writing Associate at Swarthmore College (2002-2005), I was hired and trained by Swarthmore College to tutor Swarthmore students in academic writing. I conference with the students of an assigned course to aid them in revising essays for that course. I advised students on a drop-in basis at Writing Center. As a senior, I was appointed to mentor WAs in training. Also during my Swarthmore career, I acted as student grader for an introductory l ... read more

I strongly believe that education is a life-long learning experience, that children are able to learn from each other, that a teacher can facilitate the learning process and that students and teachers are able to learn from each other. I endorse the theory that all children can learn, but also recognize that they are unique individuals, who may process learning in different ways. It is, therefore, important to use the teaching method/techniques/strategies that best work with each students. I am an advocate of bringing real life into the classroom and/or taking students on field trips to experience things first-hand. I would embrace individual student differences and build on them, not only using traditional methods, but also those that are creative, innovative and hands-on. I would like to make the classroom a fun place, where students enjoy instruction and accept responsibility for ... read more
