Teaching and School Counseling Services In One Place!

I have been a teacher for the last fifteen years. I teach social studies, but my specialization is teaching argumentative (college level) writing.I have done plenty of SAT prep and tutoring for students at the high school and college level. I am also a school counselor and can offer a vast array of services including FASFA, Naviance/Common Application and college/career counseling.
My style of education is to teach by modeling. Students need to see things in a step-by-step format with instructions, followed by an immediate example. I also provide sample argumentative essays for students who learn by seeing a complete model. My counseling style is to work with students, first by building a rapport and then using that as the foundation to get a feel for their college/career interests. I then look at their grades to help them build a custom transitional plan into early adulthood.

I'm a very bright high school senior with a rigorous AP schedule at New Britain High. I don't have any tutoring experience but I've worked for two years at a christian summer camp, so I have a lot of experience with children of all ages. Working with elementary students of all ages and levels has made me believe that all children can learn if given the opportunity and the right instruction. Not everyone learns the same way, and it is our job as teachers to make sure each student gets the instruction they need. If a student does no understand something, then we have to find another way to explain it so they do. Our job is not done until the student succeeds in learning.
As a recent education graduate I am eager to begin working with students, but in the present economy, teaching job vacancies are rare. I feel that tutoring students would still let me do what I want, and love, to do. A year long internship, student teaching, and masters level education courses have prepared me to teach students and gave me much experience as well as opportunities to learn.

Personally, I am a firm believer in the constructivist, or active learning theory. I view myself as a facilitator, presenting opportunities for students to bridge material to their own lives through personal experiences and interactions. By supporting this theory, I place the responsibility on the student as the one who must take initiative in his or her own learning, as each child brings an entirely unique perspective and experience to the classroom. By acknowledging students’ diverse backgrounds as context through which students navigate in order to construct meaning, I allow for multiple viewpoints and interpretations of content. Constructivist theory also promotes active dialogue and peer collaboration as students internalize outside ideas, whether they be newly represented in a text or by an alternate perspective of a fellow classmate. Content, no matter the subject area, must beco ... read more

I am a graduate from Albertus Magnus College and my concentration was in Child Development. Most of my education included studying the child's brain and how it develops and learns. Studying child development has become essential to my practice as a teacher in the early childhood and primary grade levels. For my masters program I have studied and focused primarily on teaching techniques for reading and writing. I have tutored students on reading and writing. I am currently teaching Pre K for 7 years now and have worked with/interned with Kindergarten, First, and Second grade teachers. Next year, I am going to be teaching third grade full time.
I enjoy working with children and getting to know them and their learning styles. Each child learns in different ways and I like to focus on using a variety of methods. Some children are more visual learners, while others are auditory learners ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

People who've seen me teach describe me as relaxed, focused, and funny. For better or worse (I like to think better), I believe in age appropriate humor as part of an overall teaching philosophy. I also tend to be lively. But the bottom line is that we all understand our goals and reach them. When I walk into a classroom or even a solo session, I want to know what the student(s) needs are. I believe in teaching to the goals and then even exceeding them. At the same time, I'm not rigid at all. There are many ways to hit the target. Students come in all shapes, sizes, and moods. As a teacher, I need to accommodate that.
I am currently self-employed as a computer software trainer. My practice includes clients as well as groups. As part of my work, I'm currently an adjunct professor at 2 local community colleges. I'm also a Sunday school teacher at my local congregation. I've been ... read more

I believe any student is capable of learning any subject when they are taught in a gentle and patient manner. It is important to help the student gain confidence with the subject and to build his self-esteem. As the student increases his knowledge and problem-solving abilities his confidence and curiosity will also increase. Learning will become a lifetime pursuit.
I have four semesters of calculus, numerous chemistry, physics, engineering, computer science, statistics, finance, accounting, marketing, management, and liberal arts courses. I also have a temporary CT teaching certificate for secondary education math.

More About This Tutor...

I truly believe a proper education can open doors, but the teacher-student relationship is the key to that success. Every student has the potential to achieve greatness, and as a tutor, I strive to find the best teaching technique for an individual. Some students learn from activity-based instruction whereas others learn through formal instruction. I tend to cater my teaching style to the student's needs, but my overarching goal is to make the material interesting and fun to learn. Without curiosity, learning a subject can be difficult, but with the right words of encouragement, any student can achieve their potential.
As a recent college graduate, it is my strong belief that education can open doors to opportunities. Through my undergraduate and graduate career, I have tutored and mentored my peers through science college courses, including biology, genetics, and chemistry. During ... read more

If you were to walk into my classroom, you would see of extremely diverse students who are actively engaged and participating in the lesson. My classroom is rarely silent. I encourage discussion. I find cooperative, small group instruction to be extremely effective. I also like to give my students opportunities to lead the class so it is not always a teacher led classroom. I strongly believe that engaging and differentiated lessons are necessary components in the success of my students in addition to highly structured and safe learning environment.
For the past four years, I have been a seventh grade Reading and Language Arts teacher in an inner city school. I love my students and my co-workers.
