My comments on tutoring English ESOL : Over 3 years experience working with ESOL students

I volunteered for Minneapolis Public Schools Adult Basic Education ESL program for over 2 years working with a wide range of students. I assisted in conversation and speaking classes for students in level 1 (little to no English) all the way to level 6 (preparation for GED test). I also have experience working as a Spanish tutor for high school Spanish students. I have studied 3 foreign languages myself (Spanish, Portuguese and Greek) and understand the difficulties, and excitement, of learning a new language. I currently work at a community clinic that serves many patients who are non-English speaking or have limited English proficiency and my background definitely allows me to be more patient with this demographic.

I am from South Korea and have been studying in America for 4 years. During 4 years, I was struggling to learn English and studying hard to follow my classes. As a result, I learned the efficient way of studying English(useful for people who are from other countries) and maintained A- grade during my high school. During my undergraduate career, there were multiple influences that contributed to my passion for teaching. First, I tutored college students from Asia who were exchange students. This gave me the opportunity to apply what we learned in the classroom, and adapt to a culture that learns differently than Americans. Second, I tutored a high schooler in Spanish. I used this as a tool to see how a person can still learn when they are not interested in the subject. Third, I taught English last summer in Mexico.
