My teaching style is very simple and I believe it is effective. I have found that going through problems does not always help kids learn. I always try to tutor the basics and establish a plan for problem solving. The children need to know how to attach a problem not how to plug numbers into equations.
While attending the University of Massachusetts at Lowell I work to help other students that were having difficulty understanding the material presented. I obtained a bachelor of science in Civil Engineering, with a concentration in Structural Analysis. The course work gave me a very strong understanding of Mathematics, and Physics. I am easy going, energetic, very passionate (especially when teaching calculus and physics), and engaging. In most cases it takes only a few sessions and students are having fun. I believe that most students can understand mathematics with a proper explanation. For example, the order of operations is usually presented to students without explanation for its existence. This gives the false sense that it is an arbitrary rule. I enjoy sharing my understanding to students, but I also enjoy providing a role model for my students. Each student requires a different approach to teaching. With this in mind, I prefer to sit one on one and work from the bottom up to try to figure out exactly where some of the issues may be. Once you better understand what it is the student isn't following, you must find a new approach to explaining the topic and reviewing it. I also believe the student must research answers on his or her own. The ability to memorize something is helpful, but it is more important to know how to find the answer or work through an answer. Often times students just memorize answers without understanding the buildup to the answer.
