Working with children always has been and always will be a passion of mine. Prior to deciding that I would focus my attention on becoming a child psychologist I contemplated following in the footsteps of a number of my most influential role models: teachers. In my eyes, there's both a monumental responsibility and a fulfillment beyond words when you have been entrusted to educate our youth. While some may choose to see teaching as an insurmountable challenge, I see it as an unparalleled opportunity to do my part to better the lives of others, and an opportunity that I have taken advantage of countless times. In addition to tutoring algebra in my past, I have had the pleasure of serving as a summer camp counselor, an after-school activity facilitator, a pediatrics unit volunteer and a number of other child-based positions, many of which have taken place in the Madison area. Science is a process by which we learn, not simply a body of knowledge to memorize. My approach to teaching biological and chemical sciences is two-pronged: to help students acquire the knowledge base necessary for understanding science, and to instill critical thinking skills through the scientific method of inquiry. I love to help students see the big picture of how various aspects of science fit together and to make connections between what they are learning and their own lives. It is these connections that spark interest and memory. When possible I prefer to incorporate a variety of active learning exercises, which can be very helpful to solidify difficult concepts and work well with many learning styles.
Attending a small liberal arts school sparked my desire to teach students in a small group setting. While my graduate course work in Biomolecular Chemistry developed my ... read more

I have a combination of teaching styles that I like to use during my classes. I first like to pre-teach a topic, then I have an activity for inquiry and at the end I like to re-cap. I also like to use a student-teaching approach where I allow students to use the learning style they are most confortable with; visual, silent moment, hands on activities. Not all children learn the same way. I believe in fostering an encouring learning experience for all children.
