My personal pedagogic philosophy ranks above all else thoughtfulness, compassion, individual attention to each student, and a dynamic, interactive understanding of the process of learning. I treat my students with the utmost respect for their intelligence and independence of mind and spirit.
I attended Sarah Lawrence College, where I studied English and Spanish literature, Ancient Greek, history and philosophy. I graduated with an MFA in English from the Iowa Writers’ Workshop in May of 2008, and I am currently the Provost’s Post-Graduate Writing Fellow in fiction at the University of Iowa. I have three years of experience teaching college students in English and creative writing. I have also occasionally tutored students at the University of Iowa in Ancient Greek.

My teaching experience has been primarily focused on elementary education, however I have tutored freshman in English and History. I have a degree in psychology from St. Ambrose in Davenport and finished my licensure at Ottawa University in Phoenix. I am certified to teach K-6 in Arizona and I have applied for Iowa certification.
Because of my elementary background, it is safe to say I am a very patient person and I use that skill in my ability. I allow the children to create their own paths and when there are roadblocks we work together to find a solution. I am not in the habit of giving students the answers. I feel education is most effective when self discovery is involved and I want my students to feel that they are learning and achieving in every way possible. All students are capable of success; some just need more guidance than others.

A Little Bit About Me...

I first like to understand the student's learning style, as we all have different methods of learning. Some are visual, others do better with reading a text, or using examples. I use a variety of methods to teach my students, depending on age. I also want to learn where and why the student is struggling with the subject. I make my tutoring sessions interesting so that I capture the student's attention and thoroughly engage him/her. I have always had a strong appreciation for education and learning new things. My educational experience was strengthened when I attended Cornell College, which has a strong liberal arts program. I immediately took an interest in the sciences and pursued a Bachelor's degree in Biology/Pre-medicine. My education was additionally complimented when I immersed myself in several language, mathematic, English, and humanity courses, which gave me a strong diversity in the liberal arts curriculum. My formal experience as a tutor is minimal. However I have been called upon by several friends and acquaintances to assist in academic assignments with which they had been struggling. It has been my experience (as well as that of friends in academia) that a great number of young people do not understand the nature of plagiarism, i.e., when to cite and why it is necessary to do so. Another common problem is with spelling and usage (e.g., their, there, they're), spell-check not withstanding. The study of History has given me an understanding of why these, among other things, are important matters and why young people should be instructed in them.
